IMPROVEMENT IN BRACELETS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,879, dated April 2l, 1874; application filed August 2e, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JOHN and ROBERT MURPHY and JAMES POOLMAN, all of Mansiield,in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Block Bracelets, of which.V the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in which- Figures Il and 2 are perspective views Ot block bracelets, constructed in accordance with our invention. In the manufacture of bracelets of horn, shell, jet, or ivory, composed of a 'series of blocks, they have heretofore been held tO- gether by two round elastic cords passing through apertures of corresponding shape, formed in each block' near its outer ends. These elastic cords, after the braceletis worn a short time, are cut by the edges of the blocks,which consequently become separated, and new elastic is required to replace them in their Original position, which is not only annoying to the wearer, but is somewhat diflicultto perform; besides which the blocks are liable to be lost. To obviate the above-mentioned Objection is the purpose, of our invention, which consists in a bracelet composed of a` series of blocks or sections of horn, shell, jet, or ivory, `with 0r without a central Ornament of similar material, each section being formed from a solid piece having a single broad aperture only made centrally through it for the reception of a single broad elastic 4 band, each end of the band whereV a central ornament is used being provided with a metal plate, which fits into andr is rivetednthereto, a secure and permanent connection being thereby insured. To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use our invention, we Vwill proceed to describe themanner in which we have carried it out.

In Fig. l of the said drawings, A is a bracelet, composed of a series of blocks, a, of horn, shell, jet, Or ivory, and a central ornament, B, of similar material, united by a flat broad elastic band, b, in the following manner: Gentrally throughfeach block, in the direction of its width, is .drilled a broad rectangular aperture, c, of sufficient depth to allow of the pas sage of the flat elastic band of a width nearly equal to that of the aperture. To4 each end of the elastic band is fastened a flat'metallic plate, d, which fits snugly into one side of the central ornament B, to which it is riveted at e, by which construction the blocks and the central ornament are permanently united together, the elastic band employed being of sufficient width to insure a strong connection.

The instrument we prefer to employ in formin gL the rectangular apertures in the blocks is a revolvin g double-pointed drill; but any other suitable tool may be used for thisl purpose.

If desired, the bracelet may be composed entirely of the blocks a, the central ornament being dispensed with, in which case the two ends of the elastic band may be lapped over each other within the aperture of one of the blocks, and secured by a rivet, h, passing through it in the direction of its thickness. (See Figs. 2 and 4.)

.'What We claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
