To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, VERNON JAMrEsoN BUCHANAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Newport and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat or Cap Sweatband Shields or Pads, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to a hat or `cap sweat band attachment and more particularly to the class of detachable shields or pads for use with hat or cap sweat bands.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a shield or pad of this character wherein it can be detachably fastened about the sweat band of a cap or hat, irrespective of the nature or style of the headgear and when in position will afford comfort to the wearer of the head-gear, as it will overcome unpleasantness to a wearer, who tips the hat or cap back from the forehead, especially during warm weather, as the shield or pad will absorb perspiration or moisture during the wearing of the lie-adgear and thereby eliminate the usual skin eruptions when the sweat band contacts with the head of the wearer.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a shield or pad of this character wherein the construction thereof is novel in form, so that it can be readily and easily applied to sweat bands for use and removed at will, especiallywhen the same becomes soiled, so that it can be laundered, thereby rendering the same sanitary and of appealing comfort when in use.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a shield or pad of this character, which will eliminate, when attached to a sweat band of a hat or cap, the discoloring of such sweat band and the distortion thereof and will assure comfort to the wearer of the hat or cap, as it will eliminate to a marked degree the moistening of the sweat band from perspiration while the hat or cap is in use.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a shield or pad of this character, which is extremely simple in construction, readily and easily applied to or removed from a sweat band of a head-gear, thoroughly reliable and e'liicient in its purpose and inexpensive to manufacture.

Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates generally a hat having therein the usual sweat band B, the hat of the type shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings being merely illustrative of the application of use of the shield or pad, hereinafter fully described.

rlhe shield or pad comprises a two-ply fabric constituting an elongated body 5 having the rounded ends 6, the plies of material being preferably of fabric, yet the same may be made from any other material, and the marginal edges of these plies are hemmed and stitched as atil 7 for uniting the plies. lt is of course understood that the body 5 may be of the required length and width and on one side thereof, near the longer edges are suitably fastened male and female fastening members 8 and 9, respectively, the same in this instance being of the ball and socket snap fasteners.

lVhen the shield or pad is applied to the sweat band, the male member 8 of the fastener projects through the hole l0 in the sweat band and engages in the female member 9 of thefastener to secure the shield or pad fixed upon the sweat band'.

From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction and manner of application and use of the shield or pad will be clearly understood, and, therefore7 a more extended explanation has been omitted.

l/Vhat is claimed is A sweat band attachment for hats comprising a flexible substantially elongated rectangular body folded at its longitudinal center upon itself to provide an outer and an inner complemental fold and adapted to straddle a sweat band from the upper edge thereof, each of the folds of said body of a Width to extend in proximity tothe lower secured edge of the sweat band when said body is mounted on the latter, a male fastener member secured to the outer fold of said body near each end and in proximity to the free longitudinal edge of said outer fold and adapted to extend through the sweat baud when said body is mounted on the latter, and female fastener members positioned to oppose the male fastener members and each secured to the inner fold of said body near each end thereof and in proximity to the free longitudinal edge of said inner fold, said male fastener members engaging with said female fastener members for detachably coupling said body to the sweat band.
