Be it known thatl, WILLIAM E. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, and a'resident of Oakland, county of Alameda, State of California, have invented a new and useful Transmission Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to transmission mechanisms and one of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved transmission device for connecting the rotary brush of a vacuum cleaner to the motor. Another object of the invention is to provide a transmission device of the character described characterized by a ready disengagement from the motor shaft an an equally ready engagement either when the motor is running or at rest and further characterized by extreme simplicity of construction with corresponding low cost of manufacture.
The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth in the following description of the preferred form of my invention which is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the specication. It is to be understood that l do not limit myself to the showing made by the said drawings and description, as l may adopt variations of the preferred form within the scope of my invention as set forth in the claims.

My transmission device comprises a 'housing 2 of cupped .form adapted to be secured to a ange 3 on the rear end of the `main housing 4 which encloses the motor 5,
the suction fan 6, the intake housing 7 and brush 8. Screws 9 passin thru the edge of the housing 2 into the ange 3 serve to secure the housing securely 1n place. A web 11 formed in the housin and a boss 12 formed on the bottom of t e housing are provided with suitable wooden bushings 13 whlch are impregnated with lubricant and 1n which the vertical shaft 14 is journaled. The lower end of the shaft is provided with a grooved pulley 16 connected by a belt 17 with the brush 8.
Fixed on the shaft 14 is a beveled wheel 18 adapted to form a driving engagement with the beveled pinion 19 fixed on the rear end of the motor shaft when the beveled wheel 18 and shaft are pressed upwardly by the spring 21, interposed between the shaft and the housing 2.
The upper end of the shaft projects thru the top wall of the housing 2 and a knurled knob 22 is journaled on the pin 23, the axis of which is parallel to the axis of the shaft v 14 with its lower face above the end of the shaft. The end of the shaft is rounded and the adjacent face of the knob is formed with .a cam so that upon rotation of the knob the shaft is thrust downwardly to disengage the beveled wheel from the pinion and break the driving connection between the two. The top of the housing 2 is flattened to provide a suitable seat 24' for the knurled knoband preferably the words 0d and On are stamped into the housing adja\\ cent the knob to indicate the direction in which the knob is to be turned to make or break the driving connection between the beveled pinion and the beveled wheel. Since the high point ofthe cam is sunk below the .surface of the knob no other stop is necessary, the knob being turned to the right or left to the limit of `its movement which 'is determinedby the recessed portion forming the cam recess. jlfn Figure 3 the parts are shown with the knob turned towards the ',ol position, that is tosay with the shaft struck downwardly and the connection broken between the beveled pinion and the beveledwheel.
In Figures 4 and 5 l have showna modified arrangement of mechanism in whichl the chief did'erence over the lmechanism-just described lies in the construction of the knob. ln this case the knob 31 is vformed with a -plate 32lixed adjacent its lower end, the plate having a lip 33 curved to provide a cam surface capable of actuating the shaft 34, which corresponds Iwith the-shaft 14 of Y Figure l. The stops to limit the movement of the knob are provided by short downwardly turned arms 36 formed integrally with the plate 32 and so proportioned and positioned as to engage the arm 37 forming part of the bracket 38 and in which the shaft 34 is journaled at its upper end. rThe bracket 38 is secured by suitable screws to the end of the main housing of the machine and a cover plate 39 also secured to the main housing encloses the shaft 34 and connected mechanism.

' 1. A transmission device for connecting the rotary brush to the motor in va vacuum cleaner, comprising a jack shaft, means connectin the brush or rotation with the jack shaft, eveled driving means interposed between said jack shaft and the motor shaft, means for resiliently retaining said driving means in engagement, and a knob journaled on an axis parallel to said jack shaft for moving said driving means out of engagement and holding said driving means disengaged.
2. A transmission device for connecting the rotary brush to the motor in a vacuum cleaner, comprising an axially movable jack shaft, means connecting the brush for rotation with the jack shaft, beveled driving means interposed between said jack shaft and the motor shaft, means for resiliently7 retaining said driving means in engagement, and a knob journal-led on an axis parallel to said jack shaft and having a cam face adapted to engage the end of said jack shaft for moving said jack shaft to disengage said driving means and holding said driving means disengaged.

A transmission device for connecting the rot-ary brush to the motor in a vacuum cleaner, comprisin a housing adapted for connection to sai cleaner, a jack shaft journaled vertically in said housing and having its upper end projecting from the top of said housing, means connectingV the brush for rotation with the jack shaft, a beveled pinion on the motor shaft, a beveled Wheel fixed 0n said jack shaft, a spring pressing said jack shaft in a direction to engage said Wheel with said pinion, and a knob journaled on said housing over said shaft and having its lower face formed with a cam adapted to move said shaft to disen age said beveled wheel from said pinion w en the knob is turned.
