Patented June 17, 1924.
UNITEDSTATES ROBERT E. MAN'LEY, OF YORK, PENNSYLVANIA.
PORTABLE amen LIGHT.
Application filed June 8,
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RoBERT E. MANLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Garage Lights; and I do hereby declare the following to be a ,full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a portable light primarily intended for use in a garage. The object of the present invention is the provision of a garage light of such type as to be more convenient in use than any existing forms. -A further object" of the present invention is the provision of a standard and lamp-carrying arm pivoted thereto and having at the pivotal point an attachment socket so that an electric tool, a drill for example, may be used in connection with the light.
It is customary at the present time to use i'n" garages what is known as a trouble light which consists merely in a lamp socket having a large wooden handle provided with a 00k on-ohe end to hang the light to any convenient point and having a wire protector over the lamp so that it may be laid on the floorfif desired.
The present light obviates the use of the trouble light and permits the throwing of the rays from the lamp in the position most convenient .to the mechanic, bein so arranged for example as to extend t e lampcarrying arm through the window or door ofa sedan or coupe so as to throw the light at any part desired, in transmission, or
brake hand work, for example.
In the drawings,-
The figure is a perspective of the light.
The base 10 is preferably a casting of such weight as to conveniently hold the lamp upright in the most extended position of the lamp-carrying arm. The tube 11 is threaded so as to. fit in the socket 12 of the casting and carries within it one- 1923'. Serial No. 644,209.
' or more sections 14 and 15 telescoping in the usual manner to form a standard and having set screws to hold the standard at the desired height. telescoping standard carries a head 17 preferabl serrated as at 18 to engage correspon ing serrations on the hollow barrel member 20 pivoted to the head 17 and adjustably secured thereon by means of the small hand wheel 21.
An arm 25 is securedto the barrel 20 in any desired manner and is bent through an angleof 90 as at 26 near its end which end carries a lamp-socket 27. The lamp 28, re flector 29, and protector 30 are all of the usual type forming no part of the present invention. In one end of the hollow barrel 20 an attachment socket 32 is provided so that the plug from a tool may be inserted therein, the flexible connector 34 passing through the barrel 20 to the attachment socket and through the hollow arm 25 to the lamp socket 2 I I The arm 25 is preferablyof such length that when the standard is completely telescoped the lamp socket 27 will be in close proximity to the base 10 this feature being very convenient for throwing the light under the chassis.
What I claimis:
1. In a portable electric light, a base, a telescoping standard connected to said base,
an arm, a lamp socket carried thereby,
means for pivotally connecting said arm and said standard, an attachment socket supported by said standard and movable with said arm, and a flexible conductor electrically connected to said sockets.
2. In a garage light, a barrel, a hollow arm secured tosaidbarrel, an attachment socket in one end of said barrel, a base, a standard rising therefrom, means for,ro-
tatably mounting said barrel on said stand- I ard, and means for adjustably securing said At its upper end the barrel in any desired angular relation with respect to said standard.
ROBERT E. MANLEY.
