a citizen of the United States, residing at Moorestown, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and Auseful Improvements in Pencils, -of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pencils and pertains .particularly to magazine pencils and to pencils for carrying-extra lead.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a compact simple device which will be durable and easily operated, and at the same time inexpensive to manufacture.
The featuresof the invention provide for the utmost simplicity in thearrangement and construction of parts, thus reducing the chance of breakage and binding of the parts to a minimum. The relative simplicity of the parts makes it possible to dispense with the need for special manufacturing machines.
The operating mechanism is similar to that new form as illustrated in my Patent No. 1,486,581, issued Nov. 21, 1922, in which the above general advantages are also presented. The present invention includes additional features presenting modifications of various parts. These details relate to the particular configuration of the rear end portion of the barrel, the mounting `of the actuating end piece on the barrel, and the attachment of the actuating spring screw to the actuating end piece.
Another feature includes the speci-lic spring detent and clasp for holdingfthe parts together.
This invention also uses the important -lw features illustrated in Patent No. 1,436,581 which give important advantages resultant from the peculiar spring feed lfeature which permits a cushioned effect, and prevents the breaking of lead and reduces to a minimum the tiring experienced by a writer after using a pencil in continuous writing.
Another feature is the particular way in which the configuration of the barrel is used in combinationV with the transparent cover and the end cover for the point end of the pencil.

The particular function of the lange 2 and the slot 2d will be further explained.
The front end is provided with a screw threaded fastening cap 3 which has a rear portion 3a with threads adapted to engage the threads 1 of the barrel. Tapering forwardly from the portion 3a, the inner Walls ot the tip are indicated at 3b, and this tapered portion extends into a more sharply inclined part indicated at 3. rThe rear end of the cap is provided with a square cut shoulder indicated at 3d, corresponding to the shoulder 1d formed by the enlarged outer surface of the rear end of the barrel. The extreme tip o't the pencil is indicated at 3e, and a restricted bore tor providing a tight sliding lit for the lead is indicated at 3f. Between the point 3 and the bore 3f there is provided a cylindrical portion having the Walls 3g which provides a loose sliding lit for the central guide tube as Will be described. Between the Walls 3g and immediately adjacent the entrace to the bore 3f is the annular inclined sur'tace 3h against Which the central tube is adapted to rest in order to position the tube centrally and bring the bore o't' the. tube Vinto alignment with the bore 3f.
A transparent sleeve l of celluloid or other suitable material is loosely .titted over the length of the barrel l and held in position by the shoulder 1d and the shoulder 31. Preferably the cylinder 4l has Walls otl the samel thickness as the width of these shoulders, so that the assembled pencil may provide aV smooth exterior. Between the barrel 1 and the cylinder -lsuitable advertising material may be inserted tor display through the cylinder 4f, or designs for artistic etlect or advertising material may be carved on the outer surtace of the barrel 1 and thus made visible through the cylinder et, although protected from actual Wear by the outer transparent covering. Claims to the transparent sleeveteature are presented in my application Serial No. 587,708, tiled September 12, 1922, a divisional application trom Serial 510,492 (now )atent 1,436,581). *y Detent means is provided Afor holding the actuating end piece in position at the rear end oi2 the barrel by Vthe member 5 which serves as a combined spring clasp and spring' detent. This member is illustrated as formed ot a recurved piece ot niet-al secured to the exterior of the barrel 1 at the point 5 by a suitable rivet. From this fastening point an arm 5b extends along the surface ot the barrel 1 and terminates with a lateral projection 5d n which extends iinvardly through the barrel to engage the telescoping end oit the member 2. As illustrated, the' end 5c engages the rear face of the insegne iiange 2 to prevent the accidental Withdrawal of the actuating end piece from the barrel. The end 5c is provided With a beveled inner face to `facilitate a sliding movement of the flange 2? past the locking end tf. ln order to Withdraw the actuating end piece, the yielding member 5b may be raised from the barrel suthciently to release the flange 2C. lnstead ont engaging the flange, a groove might be provided in the portion and the projecting end 5 might lit into the bottom oit' this groove. Such a construction would make possible also the same relative rotary movement between the end piece Q and the barrel 1 which is used to actuate the lead plunger, as Will be described. rlhe clasp end of the member 5 is indicated at 5d as extending toward the barrel ot the pencil to provide a yielding engagement with any supporting object, such as clothing. Thus this part o't the pencil serves as a combined clasp and detent, rendering unnecessary the use ot tvvo or more parts to perform the same functions.

The tube 7 has the extreme vtrout end 7 projecting beyond the end of the barrel and adapted to engage the inclined wall 8h ot the tip. The rear portion ot the tube on the opposite side of the partition 6 is indicated at Tb, and is provided with a slot through the wall thereof, as indicated at TC, this slot extending .from the rear end of the guide tube substantially all ot the way to the partition.

When the end 8a is litted into the notched closed end 2e the spring screw 8 is slightly compressed and the inner end 8b is pushed slightly against the face of the partition 6, and the lmember 8 is thus secured against any unnecessary play lengthwise within the pencil barrel.
The combined actuated screw and plunger 9 is illustrated in its removedY position in Figure 2, and in its assembled position with the other parts in Figure 1. This structure is peculiar in that the plunger rod is continuous and formed in one piece with the actuated screw portion 9a. The member is inserted in the rear end of the barrel by fitting the rod 9 into the slotted guide tube 7b. A right angle shoulder 9a extends from the straight rod 9 to the helical turn of the actuated screw part 9a. The portion 9b is shown clearly in Figure 5. The right angle shoulder 9b extends through the open slot 7 C and is prevented from turning by the Walls of this slotted opening. Comparing the respective size and pitch of the turns of the helical screw portions 8 and 9a, as sho-wn in Figures 1 and 2, it will be noted that these dimensions are substantially the same as may be observed by comparing the distance A-B, in Figure 1, with the distance C--D, in Figure 2. Referring to Figure 1 it will be noted that the turns of the member 9a substantially fill the spaces between the adjacent turns of the member 8.
The structure is assembled by first inserting a combined plunger 9 and actuated screw 9a within the slotted tube so that the shoulder 9b extends through the slot. The actuating end piece with the slotted opening 2l is fitted over the rear end of the spring 8 so that the end 8a projects through 2d. 8 is then inserted into the rear end of the bai'- rel 1 until it engages the coils 9a of the plunger. The end 8" is slipped into the closed notched end 2e, and the actuating end piece 2 is moved into the enlarged portion of the barrel 1 until the flange 2c` slips past the detent 5c. and by turning 2 clockwise or counter-clockwise, the plunger is moved back and forth. To disassemble the rear end of the pencil the spring detent 5b is pulled outwardly to disengage 5c from 2c, after which the actuating end piece may be withdrawn for examination or repair, and then replaced as before. Leads are normally inserted by removing the front end cover 3 and slipping cach additional lead as used into the front end of the tube 7, and then replacing the cap 3. Adjustment of the member 2 draws the plunger 9 forward or backward, and thc lead is forced fromV the guide tube 7 through the bore 3f into position for use Vat the tip of the pencil 3e.

The same eHect as provided by the use of the groove 1e may also be provided if a slot is cut completely through the wall 1, andA in either arrangement theY projection 9c' need not be longer than the thickness of the wall 1. The groove or slot should extend the length of the rear chamber from the lrear end of the smaller bore of the barrel to the partition 6.
Further strengthening means for the tube 7 may be provided by providing an additional portion similar to 6 but spaced therefrom, Vor by providing a relatively wide partition.
The arrangement of the working parts provides a resilient spring-like yielding movement to the lead which is desirable for easy writing. The simplicity of the parts has provided an inexpensive construction, f
even less expensive than thatV form illustrated in the Patent No. 1,436,581, and one which lis not subject to breakage or repeated adjustments. The materials may be made' from any` readily worked metal,A and the t substitution of lone material over another will not depart from the scope of thisy invention.
I claim:
1. In a pencil, abarrel having a front end and a rear end, a front end piece secured to said frontend, a rear end piece having a telescopic connection with said rear end of said'barrel and a coacting surface in the side wall thereof, and an actuating helically coiled spring screw member rotatably mounted within said barrel and having one end thereof projecting radially and in engagement with said coacting surface and. thus being fixed to said roar end piece. j j, Y.

thereof, and an actuating helically coiled spring screw member rotatably mounted within said barrel and having one end thereof projecting laterally into said recess and thus being detachably secured to said rear end piece.
3, ln a pencil,V a barrel having a front end and a rear end formed as a tube with a continuous side wall therearound, a front end piece secured to said front end, a rear end piece having a telescopic and rotatabie connection with said rear end of said barrel, an actuating helically coiled spring screw member rotatably mounted within said barrel and having one end thereof secured to said rear end piece, and a detent engaging said rear end piece and said barrel and movable with respect to both said barrel and said rear end piece and permitting relative rotation but not lengthwise movement of these parts.
4:. ln a pencil, a barrel having a front end and a rear end and a main bore extending therethrough, the walls of said barrel adjacent the rear end thereof being enlarged and forming a secondary and larger bore adjacent the rear end, a rear end piece having a barrel portion adapted to project within said secondary bore and having a rotatable engagement with said barrel, detentV means engaging said rear end piece and said barrel and movable with respect to both said barrel and said rear end piece and permitting relative rotation but not accidental lengthwise movement of these parts, an actuating helically coiled spring screw member rotatably mounted within said barrel and having one end thereof secured to said rear end piece, and an actuated coiled screw member positioned in engagement with said actuating screw and adapted to travel in both said bores.
5, ln a pencil, a barrel having a front end and a rear end and a main bore extending therethrough, the walls of said barrel adjacent the rear end thereof being enlarged and forming a secondary and larger bore adjacent the rear end, a rear end piece having a barrel portion adapted to project within said secondary bore and have a rotatable engage-ment with said barrel, detent means engaging said rear end piece and said barrel and movable with respect to both said barrel and said rear end piece and permitting relative rotation but not accidental lengthwise movementfof these parts, an. actuating helically coiled spring screw member rotatably mounted within said barrel.
and having one end thereof detachably secured to said rear end piece, and an actuated coiled screw member positioned in engagement with said actuating screw and adapted to travel in both said bores.
6. In a pencil, a barrel having a front end and a rear end and a main bore. extending therethrough, the walls of said barrel adjacent the rear end thereof being enlarged and forming a secondary and larger bore adjacent the rear end, a rear end piece having a barrel portion adapted to project within said secondary bore, an annular flange on the inner end of said rear end piece, a detent member movable with respect to both said barrel and said rear end piece and positioned to normally engage the rear face of said iiange and prevent the withdrawal of the une from said barrel, an actuating helically coiled spring screw member rotatably mounted within said barreland having one end thereof secured to said rear end piece, and an actuated coiled screw member positioned in engagement with said actuating screw and adapted to travel in both said bores.
7. ln a pencil, a barrel having a front end and a rear end and a main bore extending A1f therethrough, the walls of said barrel adj acent the rear end thereof being enlarged and forming a secondary and larger bore adjacent the rear end, a rear end piece having a barrel portion adapted to project within said secondary bore, an annular ange on the inner end of said rear end piece, a yieldable detent member extending through said barrel and positioned to normaly engage the rear face of said flange and prevent the withdrawal of the same from said barrel, and an actuating helically coiled sprin screw member rotatably mounted within saidj barrel and having one end thereof secured to said rear end piece.
8. ln a pencil, a barrel having a front end and a rear end, a front end piece secured to said front end, a rear end piece having telescopic connection with said rear end of said barrel, said rear end piece having a slot therein extending lengthwise thereof, thence recurved and terminating with an inner end between the end of said rear end case, and an actuating helically coiled spring screw member rotatably mounted within said barrel and having one end thereof detachably secured in the inner end of said slot.
9. In a pencil, a barrel haing a front end and a rear end formed as a tube with a continuous side wall therearound, a front end piece secured to said front end, a rear end piece having a telescopic and rotatable connection with said rear end of said barrel, an actuating helically coiled spring screw member rotatably mounted within said barrel and having one end thereof secured to said rear end piece, and detent means carried by said barrel and movable with respect to both said barrel and said rear end piece and in releasable engagement with said rear end piece and permitting relative rotation but not lengthwise movement of the rear end piece with respect to the barrel when said detent meansis in engagement with said rear end piece.
10. In a pencil, a barrel having a bore therein and formed as a tuhe with a continuous side Wall therearound, an end piece in telescopic rotatable engagement with said barrel and having a bore of the same diameter as the bore of said barrel and in alignment therewith, a coiled actuating screw engaging the Walls of both bores, and an actuating coiled screw member positioned in engagement With said actuating screw and adapted to travel in both said hores.
11. In a pencil, a barrel having a bore therein and formed as a tube With a continuous side Wall therea-round, an end piece in telescopic rotatable engagement With said barrel and having a bore offthe same diameter as the bore of said barrel and in alignment therewithj the Walls o1" the bores of said barrel and said end piece extending as a substantially continuous cylindrical surface, a coiled actuating screw positioned Within said bore and engaging the cylindrical Walls thereof, and an actuating coiled screw member positioned in engagement with said ac tuating sci-ev,7 and adapted to travel in both said bores. t
