Description

E. R. SPRINGER noon CLOSING nnvrcr:
Jwne 3 9 1924- Filed July 24. 1923 V,
Patented June 3, 1924.-
ldddzed EMIL R. SPRINGER, OE HEALDTON, GKLAHOMA.
DOOR-CLOSING DEVICE. I
Application filed July 24,
T 0 aZZ whom it may concern. v
Be it known that I, EMIL R. SPRINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Healdton, in the county of Carter, State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Door-Closing Device; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
The invention relates to door closing devices, and has for its object to provide a device of this character comprising a vertically disposed rotating shaft having an arm for engaging the door on its inner side, and a spiral portion on which a weighted member is spirally mounted. The spirally mounted weighted member cooperates with the spiral of the shaft, whereby said shaft, upon release of the door, after being opened will be rotated and the arm carried by the shaft, which engages the door will move said door to closed position.
A further object is to provide means for guiding the weight in its vertical movement incident to the opening and closing of the door, which means prevents rotation of the weight.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a portion of conventional form of door showing the door closing device applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the door closing device.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of the door closing device.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a conventional form of door, 2 the door frame and 3 the door hinge, all of which structure is of conventional form. Secured adjacent the side of the door frame 2 is a plate 1-, which plate is provided with a horizontally disposed arm 5, having a socket 6 for the reception of the pintle 7 of the vertically disposed shaft 8. The shaft 8 is held in vertical position by means 1923. Scria1 1\To. 653,480.
of the bearing 9 carried by the door frame, and consequently it will be seen that the shaft 8 may rotate in its vertical position. The amount of rotation necessary for the shaft Sis less than a full revolution as the door 1 in moving from open to closed position only moves about one hundred and eighty degrees. The shaft 8 is pro ided with a horizontally disposed arm 10 which overlies the inner side of the door 1 and is provided with a roller 11 which engages the door on the inner side of the door, and when the shaft 8 is rotated in the direction of the arrow a, the roller rolls slightly in engagement with the door and the arm 10 forces the door to closed position.
The upper endof the shaft 8 above the bearing member 9 is provided with a spiral portion 12, on which spiral portion the weight 13 is slidably mounted. The weight 13 is sufficiently heavy whereby it will move downwardly when the door is opened and released and impart a rotation to the shaft 8 in the direction of the arrow a. However it is obvious that it will be necessary to prevent the rotation of the weight 13 with the shaft during a door closing operation, and to accomplish this object, one side of the weight 13 is provided with an outwardly extending arm 14 which terminates in the bifurcation 15. Mounted within the bifurcation 15 are spaced rollers 16, between which rollers the vertical portion 17 of the U-shaped bracket 18 is disposed, therefore it will be seen that the bracket 18 will not only prevent rotation of the weight 13 with the shaft 8, but at the same time will guide the weight in its vertical movement incident to opening and closing the door 1. The spiral member may be a right or left hand one according to the way the door is hung, that is a right or left hung door, and it is to be understood that the spiral may be made accordingly. I
From the above it will be seen that a doc closing device is provided, which device is weight actuated by means of a weight slidably mounted on a spiral member, and consequently the operation'is positive, the parts reduced to a minimum, thereby obviating the difficulty experienced in devices of this character wherein a multiplicity of parts are used. In Figures 1 and 3 the door is shown in closed position, and consequently the weight 13 is in its lowest position, however upon opening the door the weight 13 will move upwardly on spiral portion 12 of the shaft 8, and will remain in said position until the door is released, at which time the weight will move downwardly on the spiral portion and impart a rotation to the shaft 8 for closing the door.
The invention havina been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. The combination with a hinged door, of a door closing device therefor, said device comprising a vertically disposed rotatable shaft, an arm carried by said shaft engaging the side of the door, the upper end of said shaft provided with a spiral, a'weight threaded on said spiral and longitudinally movable thereon, means for preventing rotation of the weight with the spiral, and means for guiding said weight in its vertical movement.
2. The combination with a hinged door,
of a door closing mechanism, said mechanism comprising a vertically disposed rotatable shaft, the upper end of said shaft being provided with a spiral member, a vertically movable weight threaded on the spiral member, an arm carried by said,
weight, spaced rollers at the ends of said arms and a vertically disposed guide member disposed between said rollers and forming means for guiding the weight in its vertical movement and preventing rotation of the weight during: its vertical movement.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
