FOLDALBLE BOX AND CASE.
Application filed August 22, 1923, Serial No. 658,798.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WALTER HERBERT WILKINSON, Southwaite Park, Greensborou'gh, in the State of Victoria and Commonwealth of Australia, and GEORGE Josnrn Minna, a
British subject, residing at No. 82 Walter Street, Ascot Vale, in the said State,.have invented new and useful Improvements in Foldable Boxes and Cases, of which the following is a specification. 2 Y 5 I This invention relates to that type of box or case which, when empty, is capable, after its top and sides have been removed, of having its ends folded so asto lie parallel with and above thejbottom of the box or case, a sufficient space being left between said ends and bottom, to permit of the said top and sides being inserted in said space between the said ends and bottom,'the parts'being held securely together by the same means which hold the parts together when assembled to form a box or case, thus ensuring a considerable saving in freight as between the manufacturer of the box and his customers, and also in the case of returned empties. I p j According to our invention, a box or case of the type specified, is so constructed as that, when the parts thereof are assembled, the lower edge of each side rests on the bottom of the box, whilst the ends of the box, which are of less width than the bottom and are pivoted thereto, are situated between the outer extremities of the sides. The top edge of each'end of the box projects upwardly slightly above the sides thereof, each end having two parallel horizontal cleats on its outer side, the lower edge of each of the lower cleats extending below the bottom of the end to which it is attached and being in contact with the adjacent end of the bottom and the respective ends of the sides of the box. The top of the box rests on the upper edge of each side and between the upwardly projecting portion at each end. Our invention also comprises the meanswe have devised for locking the various parts together when assembled to form a box, such means being also adapted to lock the various parts to ether when the box has been folded up.

These ends fit between the sides ,1, the lower edge ofeach end resting upon the bottom 2. 4 is the'top ofthe box, 5 a'nd5 are horizontal cleats on thebutside of each end 3, and 6 are slots which extend liorizontally from end to end of'said cleatse and 5 The lower cleats 5 as'shownjin Figures 1 and 2, projectbelow thelbott'om edge. of the sides 1 of the'box. Each end of the "bottom 2 of the box abuts against the projecting ends of the cleats 5 7 are cleats, one at either end, and on the lower 'side of said bottom 2. 8 are slats which extend horizon tally from end to end of said cleats 7. 10 are cleats one at either end, and on the outside of said top 4. The inner edge of each of these cleats 10 is bevelled as at 11. 12 is a oleat situated midway between said cleats 10. The means for holding the parts together when assembled to form a box will now be described. 13 are rods, which extend through the slots 6 The said rods at their outer ends are bent inwardly at right angles, as at 1 1, and formed integral with a vertical rod 10', whereby,
