BRACKET Filed Jan. 29, 1923 74 74 725/ Dav BEA ATTORNEY Fatented May 27, 1924.
UNITED STATES 1,495,889 PATENT o'F'FicE.
WALTER DAMBEK, or CHICAGO, 'rLLI It'us,
BRACKET.
Application filed January 29, 1923. Serial No; 615,702.
designed for household use for supporting shelves in a bath room or other desired place and an object of the invention is to provide a strong, rigid, durable bracket which may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost and one which may be made of a single length of bar metal if desired and also a bracket which is designed to support an upper relatively large and a: lower relatively small shelf providing greater shelf area in practically the same room space which is required by a single shelf of present approved construction.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description and in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the improved bracket.
Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 1 is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawingthe improved bracket is preferably constructed of a single length of bar metal however, if it is so desired it may be con sstructed of two pieces of metal without departing from the spirit of this invention.
The bracket comprises a horizontal arm 1 which has the diagonal brace 2 connected to its outer free end. The diagonal brace 2 is formed by bending the strip of metal along the under surface of the arm 1 for a short distance inwardly fromthe outer end of the arm as shown at 3 and then extend it diagonally downwardly from the arm 1. The length of the bar metal from which the brace 2 is formed is twisted at spaced points as indicated at 4 for positioning the por tions 5 of the brace transversely to the ends and central portion of the brace as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. transversely extending portions 5 have oppositely disposed ribs 6 struck therefrom for increasing the strength of the brace.
The l The bar metal of which the bracket is formed extends. upwardly and vertically from the lower end of the diagonal brace 2 and has its upper end bent inwardly to pro vide a supporting shoulder 7 upon which a horizontal auxiliary shelf supporting arm 8 rests. The horizontal auxiliary shelf supporting arm 8 is formedat the lower portion and extends transversely to the depending section 9 ofthe vertical arm 10 which vertical arm is formed by the portions 9 and 11 upon the upper end of the latter of which the supporting slioudler 7 is formed. The portion 9 is formed integrally with the arm 1 and the-end of the bar of metal of which the bracket is formed. is bent, outwardly of the arm 8. to provide a substantially diagonal portion 12 which is riveted' or otherwise suitably attached to the intermediate flat portion 13 of the diagonal bract- 2 and to provide the substantially vertical bracing arm. 14; which has a shoulder 15 formed upon its uppermost end which abuts the under surface of the arm 1 intermediate the ends of the arm. The arms 1 and 10 are provided with a plurality of screw receiving openings 16 which are adapted to receive screws for attaching a shelf to the bracket and for attaching the bracket to a suitable support. The outermost opening 16 extends through the overlapping or engaging portions of the arms 1 and 10 respectively with the end portions of the diagonal brace 2 while the intermediate opening 16in the arm 1 extends through the shoulder or angled end 15 so that the screw or bolt passed through this intermediate opening 16 will serve to connect the armv 14 to the arm 1 and also connect the shelf to the bracket. All of the openings 16 are positioned at proper distances from the corners and joints of the bracket to permit maximum strength thereof. The arms 8 and 14 are provided with suitable openings 17 by means of which the bracket may be attached thereto if desired. If it is so desired the bar or bars of metal fromwhich the bracket is formed may have their. edge portions crimped or bent transversely as shown at 20 for increasing the strength of the bracket.
It is, of course, to be understood that-the invention may beconstructed in various desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. As a new article of manufacture a shelf supporting bracket comprising an attaching arm, a shelf supporting arm extending at right angles thereto, a second shelf supporting arm positioned beneath and parallel with said first named shelf supporting arm, a diagonal brace connected to and connecting the spaced ends of said shelf sup porting and attaching arms, said brace hav-- ing its ends flattened and lying in facial abutment with the end portions of said arms, said brace being twisted intermediate its ends and central portion to provide transversely extending portions lying between the ends and central portion and at right angles thereto, and an additional brace between the first supporting arm and central portion of the brace.
2. As a new article of manufacture, bracket including an attaching arm, a shelf supporting arm at right angles thereto, a diagonal brace connecting the ends of the shelf support and attaching arm, said brace having its ends flattened and lying in facial abutment with the end portions of the arms, said brace being twisted at points between the central portion thereof and its ends to provide portions extending transversely with respect to the ends and central supporting arm connected to the central 7 portion of the brace, and a second brace member projecting upwardly from the central portion of the first brace and engaging the under surface of the first supporting arm. 1
3. As a new article of manufacture a shelf supporting bracket comprising an attaching arm, a shelf supporting arm ex tending at right angles thereto, a second shelf supporting arm positioned beneath and parallel with said first named shelf supporting arm, a diagonal brace connected to and connecting the spaced ends of said shelf supporting and attaching arms, said brace having its ends flattened and lying in facial abutment with the end portions of said arms, said brace being twisted intermediate its ends and central portion to provide transversely extending portions, arms positioned parallel with said shelf supporting and attaching arms, a diagonal portion connecting said last named arms, and con-. nected to the central portion of said diag--' onal brace.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WALTER DAMBEK.
