IMPROVEMENT IN CARTRIDGE-CAPPING IMPLEMENTS.

To all whom `it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. RAUB, of Nevada, in the county of Vyandot and State of Ohio, have invented .a new Improvement in Cartridge-Capper; and I do herebyT declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

This invention relates to an improvement in device for setting the cap into vthe head of cartridge-shells, the object being to dispense with the usual device for holding the shell and it consists in a base constructed to set over and engage the flange of the shell, so as to be held thereon in the proper relative position, combined with a follower and cam-lever, by the operation of which the cap may be set into the cavity in the head of the shell, as more fully hereinafter described.

proper relative position upon the shell 5 but, if preferred, the groove c may extend around the base and produce the same result. In the base A is a vertical follower, b, arranged as seen in Fig. 3, so that when the base is set upon the shell the follower will stand centrally or axially over the central cavity or nipple C in the shell. Around the follower a spring is arranged, as shown, the tendency of which is to hold the follower up to the base. Above the follower a lever, D, is arranged upon a pivot, f, the lower end of the lever of cam shape, so that, by turning the lever as denoted in broken lines, Fig. 3, the follower will be forced down; therefore, to cap a cartridge, place the cap upon the nipple or cavity in the usual manner, and set the base onto the shell; then draw down the lever, and the follower b will force the cap to its place. Thus I dispense with the usual holding device, and materially simplify the instrument and reduce its bulk.

The lever D is preferably formed for a screw v driver at its upper end, as denoted in Fig. 2, and the stop l is preferably shaped as shown, so as to form a convenient hook or' point to remove the exploded cap.l

The central cavity u upon the under side of the base affords a convenient guide to conduct and hold the cap to its proper relative position over the nipple preparatory to being forced to place.
