STATES MAUDE E. FUDGE, OF BILLINGS, MONTANA.
FASTENING DEVICE.
Application filed February 16, 1922. Serial No. 537,139.
To cZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAUDE E. FUDGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Billings, in the county of Yellowstone and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Fastening Device; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a fastening device.
An important object is to provide a fastening means consisting of a flexible element to be anchored at one end and having fastening members movable thereon independently thereof and of each other, and with the elements operable as a draw means for said fastening members and adapted for subsequent securing in a taut condition.
Additional objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating one practical embodiment.
In said drawing Figure 1 is a bottom or inverted plan view of an ironing board having its cover secured in place by means of the improved fastening device, and v Figure 2 is a perspective view of the fastening device alone.
Like reference characters designate like or similar parts in both views.
To illustrate one application of the fastening device, a conventional ironing board is shown at 10 having a usual detachable cloth cover 11 stretched thereover and with the marginal edge portion disposed across the bottom of the board 10 as usual.
wise secured to said eyelets as at 15. Intermediate the hooks 13 a plurality of fastening or securing members 16 are provided, preferably being hooks similar to the hooks 13 and having eyelets at 17 similar to eyelets 14; and through which the element 12- loosely passes so that the fastening members 16 may be adjusted relatively to, and independently of each other and the element 12. It will be understood of course that the number of securing members 16 employed may vary according to the individual desire or use to which the fastening device is put.
In use, one of the hooks 13 is secured to the cover 11 at an appropriate location and the hooks 16 are then attached to the cover also, preferably being fastened alternately adjacent side edge portions thereof as shown. Thereafter, the unfastened hook 13 is grasped and pulled so as to exert a drawing strain on the fastened hook 13 and the hooks 16 in order to render the cover 11 taut over the ironing board and the element 12 taut after which the grasped or remaining 7 hook 13 is engaged with the cover 11 where by the latter is securely fastened.
Particular attention is called to the fact that the hooks 16 are adjustable relatively to each other independently and along the element 12 in order that they may effectively accommodate themselves to the portion or portions of an article or means to be fastened.
The improved fastening i also readily detachable by first removing one of the hooks 13 so as to relieve the element 12 of tension,
after which the hooks .16 and remaining hook 13 may be removed.
Although I have shown the fastening as applied to an ironing board cover, a limitation to such use is not to be inferred inasmuch as the fastening is adapted for use as such generally. Although all of its uses are unnecessary to be set forth, it may be mentioned that the fastening may be further used on covers of stools, cushions, seats, head rests, furniture, mattresses, baby carriages, cradles, fruit trees, hay or grain stacks, wagons, surgical dressings, life boats, and further to secure blankets on animals, to. hold chains on automobile tires, to secure tents to stakes and for use as a lattice for vines.
Changes within the spirit and scope of the invention may be made.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is A fastening comprising flexible draw elements, an anchoring hook secured to each end of said draw element, a plurality of hooks each having an eyelet through which said draw element loosely passes whereby the hooks are movable independent of each other and independent of said draw element, one of said anchoring hooks adapted to be hooked to the member to be fastened, said movable hooks adapted to be hooked at different points to the member to be fastened, said draw element adapted to have tension applied thereto to draw said hooks toward each other, and the second of said anchoring hooks adapted to be hooked to the element to be fastened. to secure the draw element while under tension, said hooks preventing detachment of said fastener from the member to be fastened owing to their hooked connection with said member.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
