WEIGHING- CART.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,939, dated May 20, 1856.
To all whomit may concern Be it known that I, JAMES WV. MARTIN, of Burlington, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Cart for WVeighing Coal, Goods, &c., when Loaded or Placed lVithin the Body of the Cart; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a side elevation of a cart with my improvement applied to it. Fig. 2, is an inverted plan of ditto. Fig. 8 a detached view of the levers by which the cart body is raised from the back part of the shafts or thills and axle.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents the body of the cart, and B, is the axle.
C, C, represent bars which are placed one at each side of the axle and parallel with it, the ends of said bars being connected to cross bars D, D, attached to the axle near its ends.
E, E, represent two levers, which work on pivots (a), (a) in projecting bars (7)) attached to the inner sides of the cross bars D, D. There is a lever E, at each side of the axle B, and upright rods (0) are attached to the levers E, at (d), the upper ends of said rods being connected to the bottom of the body A, of the cart. The shape or form of these levers is shown plainly in Fig. 2. To the levers E, E, there is attached a link (6) having a lever F, attached to it by a pin The lever F, works on a pivot (g) in the lower end of a rod (h) in the underside of the axle B. The outer end of the lever F is connected by a rod to a scale beam the scale beam being connected to one end of a lever H, which works on a pivot (j) attached to the side of the cart body A, as shown clearly in Fig. 1.
The bottom of the body A, has four conical or taper pins attached to it. These pins pass through the cross bars D, D, and have heads (Z) on their lower ends as shown clearly in Fig. 1.
I, I, are two bars which work through loops (m) on the under side of the cross bars D, D. These bars have notches made in one end and have slots (0) made through them near their opposite ends, the inner sides of said slots having circular enlargements to allow the heads of the pins (70) to pass through.
J, is a flat bar or plate, the ends of which are attached to the bars I, I, and K, is a crank rod, which is connected by links (p) to the bar or plate J. The bar or plate J, works on guide pins (9), (9) attached to the under side of one of the bars C.
L, L, represent shafts or thills, the back ends of which are attached by pivots (1") to the outer sides of the cross bars D, D, and M, is the usual bar employed for keeping the front end of the body A, down upon the shafts or thills, said bar passing through loops (.9) (s) which are attached to the shafts or thills and pass through the front ends of the lower side pieces of the body The operation is as follows: When the body A, is loaded, the bar M, is withdrawn from the loops (8) and by turning the crank shaft K, the bars I, I, are moved so that the notches (n) will be withdrawn from the heads (Z) of the taper pins (70) and the enlarged parts of the slots (0) will be brought in line with the heads (Z) of the two opposite pins, at the same time the bar J will be thrown underneath the back cross piece A, of the shafts or thills L, the bar J, preventing the body A from tilting. By drawing downward the end of the lever H, the levers E, E, will throw the body A, upward free from the axle B, and the body A and the load it contains may then be weighed by adjusting the weight on the scale beam G, in the usual manner. The load may then be dumped by turning the crank K, so that the bar J, will be thrown clear from the cross piece A, of the shafts or thills L the body A being secured at the same time to the cross bars D, D, by the notches and slots in the bars I, I.
The above improvement is extremely simple and convenient, it may be applied at a small cost to carts and will be a check against the frauds now practiced by dealers in coal, etc., as purchasers can weight the load in the cart before the load is dumped therefrom.
