UNITED STATES ARTHUR NED APPLE, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DISPLAY BASKET.
Application led July 31, 1923. Serial No. 654,905.
To all whom z't'may concern.'
Be it known that I, ARTHUR NED APPLE, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Baskets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in display baskets.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved display basket for the use of grocers and the like which when erected is of large capacity but which may be collapsed to a compact form.
A further object is to provide an improved display basket formed of wire which is neat and attractive in appearance.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I is a perspective view of my improved basket with one of the extension wings collapsed. y
Fig. II is a fragmentary perspective view` showing structural details, the collapsed position of the legs being shown by dotted lines.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, I provide a tray-like body member 1 formed of woven Wire and having a relatively heavy rim orl border wire 2.
At the corners oi the body are uprights 3 formed of loops of wire` the ends or arms of the loops being formed into eyes 5 embracing the top or rim wire 2. These uprights are of such length that their lower or bight ends project below the bottom of the basket.
The legs 6, also formed of wire, have laterally disposed coils 7 at the lower ends thereof constituting feet. The legs have eyes 8 formed therein by coils engaging the bight portions 10 of the supports, thus providing a pivotal connection for the legs to the uprights.
'The legs are connected in pairs by the cross pieces 11 and 12. The cross piece l1 has an eye 13 formed by a coil therein, this eye being engaged by the eye 14 in the brace 15. The cross piece 12 is provided with an offset 16 therein which is engaged by the hook 17 on the brace when the legs are erected.
The upper ends of the legs are extended above their pivot eyes 8 into arms 18 which engage the sides of the basket, limiting the outward swing of the legs so that when the legs are connected by the brace 15 they are effectively supported in upright position, at the same time, they may be collapsed flat against the bottom of the basket. l
I provide Wing extensions 19 for one side and the ends of the basket, these wing extensions being formed of woven wire and having relatively heavy, top, bottom and end border wires 20, 21 and 22 respectively. The end border wires are extended into eyes 23 pivotally engaging the rim wire 2, so that the wings are supported to be swung to erected position as extensions for the sides of the basket or to be collapsed within the basket.
The wings are supported in their erected position by the-'arms 24 which are arranged on the inner sides of the woven wires or the-wing but pass to the outside of the bot- The projecting ends of the Wings are oft'-l set as illustrated to receive the rim wire 2.
My improved display basket is especially designed by Ine for use in displaying bread and other articles of merchandise, the exten- Asion wing being omitted from the front side of the basket so that the contents are more accessible, as for instance. when placed upon a counter, the customer may conveniently reach the contents, making the basket particularly desirable for self-serving stores.
The basket has the further advantage of beingl collapsible for storage or transportation. i v
Having thus described my invention. what I claim as new and desire to secure by Tietters Patent, is: y
1. A display basket comprising a traylike body member of woven wire provided with a relatively heavy rim wire, woven wire extension wings provided with relatively heavy border wires extending across the top, bottom and ends thereof, vthe end border wires being extended into eyes pivotally engaging the rim wire of said body member so that said wings may be collapsed within the body member or swung to erected position as extensions thereof, and supporting arms disposed transversely of said wings with their lower ends projecting below the bottom thereof to engage the sides of the body member when the wing members are swung to erected position, the lower ends of said supporting arms being inwardly offset, said arms being arranged on the outer sides of the bottom border wires and on the inner sides of the woven wires of said wings.
2. A display basket comprising a traylike body member of woven wire provided with a relatively heavy rim wire, woven wire extension wings provided with relatively heavy border wires extending across the top, bottom and ends thereof, the end border wires being extended into eyes pivotally engaging the rim Wire of said body member so that said Wings may be collapsed within the body member or swung to erected position as extensions thereof, and supporting arms disposed transversely of said wings with their lower ends projecting below the bottom thereof to engage the sides of the body member when the wing members are swung to :zo`
erected position.
3. A display basket comprising a trayy like body member provided with a relatively heavy rim wire, extension wings provided with relatively heavy border wires extending across the top and ends thereof, the end bor'- der wires being extended into eyes pivotally engaging the rim wire of said body member so that said wings may be collapsed within the body member or swung to erected position as extensions thereof, and supporting arms disposed transversely of said Wings with their lower ends projecting below the bottoms thereof to engage the sides of the body member when the wing members are swung to erected position.
4. A display basket provided with a relatively heavy rim wire, loop-like uprights disposed adjacent the corners of said basket, the ends of said loops being engaged over said rim wire, the bights of the loops projecting below the bottom of the basket, legs formed of Wires having eyes therein engaging the bights of said uprights, the ends of said legs being extended above the eyes to engage the side of the basket when the legs are erected, cross rods connectin said legs in pairs, one of said cross rods being provided with an e e, and a brace rod enga d with such eye an having a hook at its ot er end,
the other cross rod having an offset therein with which said hook may be engaged when the legs are in erected position.
5. A display basket provided with a relatively heavy rlm wire, loop-like uprights disposed adjacent the corners of said basket, the ends of said loops being engaged over said rim wire, the bights of the loops projecting below the bottom of the basket, legs formed of wires having eyes therein engaging the bights of said uprights, cross ro( s connecting said legs in pairs', one of said cross rods being provided with an eye, and a brace rod engaged with such eye and having a hook at its other end, the other cross rod 'having an offset therein with which said hook may be engaged when the legs are in erected position.
6. A display basket provided with a relatively heavy rim wire, loop-like uprights dis posed adjacent the corners of said basket, the ends of said loops being engaged over said rim wire, the bights of the loops projecting below the bottom of the basket, and legs formed of wires having eyes therein engaging the bights of said uprights, the ends of said legs being extended above the eyes to engage the side of the basket when the legs are erected.
7. A basket provided with a relatively heavy rim wire, leg supporting uprights disposed with their upper ends engaglng said rim Wire and their lower ends projecting below the bottom of the basket, legs having eyes therein engaging the lower ends of said uprights, said legs being extended above their eyes to engage the sides of the basket when the legs are erected, cross rods connectin said legs in pairs, and a brace rod pivota ly engaged with one of said cross rods and having a hook in its other end engageable with the other cross rod when the legs are in erected position.
8. A basket provided with a relatively heavy rim wire, leg supporting uprights disposed with their upper ends'engagmg said rim wire and their lower ends projecting below the bottom of the basket, legs having eyes therein engaging the lower ends of said uprights, said legs being extended above their eyes to engage the sides of the basket when the legs are erected, cross rods connecting said legs in pairs, and a brace rod for connecting said cross rods when the legs are erected.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
