To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that we, VILLIAM SinnBoT- TOM and ROY B. SMITH, both citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Melrose and Arlington Heights, county of MiddleseX, State of Massachusetts, have. invented an Improvement in Ornamental Devices, of which the following desciption, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.

This invention relates to improvements in ornamental devices and the object thereof is to provide a novel ornamental article comprising a mat-having an aperture conforming substantially to the form or silhouette of a natural object and a material underlaying said aperture, preferably of a color or colors contrasting with the color of said mat, adapted to represent the colors of the selected natural object.

Preferably the mat and also the underlay for the same comprise respectively lustrous material adapted to present a pleasing and attractive appearance. In the preferred embodiment oi the. invention disclosed herein the mat consists of a thin layer of mother-oil?- pearl apertured to present the form or silhouette of a natural object, such as a butterfly, bird, flower, or other living object, but it will be understood that the mat may be apertured to present a conventional or any other form of design.

A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the drawing as applied to an ornamental pendant or locket, but it will be understood that the principle of the inve1ition may be adapted to any form of ornamental device or work of art to which it is applicable within the meaning and scope of the claims.

The preferred embodiment of the inven tion illustrated herein comprises a mat]. of lustrous material, preferably of mother-ofpearl, having an aperture 2 cut therethrough presenting an ornamental contour such as that of the form or silhouette of a natural object.

As illustrated in Fig. 1 the aperture? conforms substantially to the silhouette of a bird in flight. A thin layer 8 of preferably lustrous material underlays the aperture 2 and its margins extend beneath the The underlaying device 3 may be mat 1. of. any suitable material presenting desirable colors. In the preferred embodiment of the invention disclosed herein the underlaying device comprises associated members of butterfly wings, said members beingselectedto present the colors which are desirable to produce the desired effect.

In the device disclosed in Fig. 1 the entire wing of a blue butterfly, or associated parts of a blue butterfly wings are employed for underlaying the aperture 2 so as to produce the appearance of a bluebird in flight.

In order to complete the simulation oi"- a bluebird the remainder of the contour of the bird is formed by painting upon the mat desirable colors having the configuration required to finish such simulation.

As illustrated in Fig. 1 the crest 4 is painted upon the mat above the cut-out porstantially the contour of a butterfly. The.

body portion 10 of the butterfly extends axially of the wings and at its ends overlays the mat. This reverse face is also provided with a cover 11 of transparentimaterial and the two covers are bound together by a rim 12 of metal which is provided with a boss 13' having an eye 14: by means of which the pendant or locket may be supported.

In case the mat is of a translucent or semi-translucent character a coating of opaque material preferably is applied to the back of the mat to prevent the color of the underlay from appearing through the mat so that the appearance of this color Will be restricted to the aperture above described It will be understood that the embodiments of the invention disclosed herein are illustrative and not restrictive and that various changes in form, material, construction and arrangement of parts may be made Within the spirit and scope of the following claims.

Having thus described our invention, What We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. An ornamental device comprising a mat of thin material having an aperture presenting a contour conforming substanti ally to the form of a natural object, a fleXi-. ble material presentingcolors simulating those of said natural object underlaying said aperature and a cover of transparent material overlaying said mat.

2. An ornamental device comprising a. mat having an aperture presenting an ornamental contour, a device of flexible thin material having a lustrous surface contrasting in color with said mat underlaying said aperture, a support of resilient material underlaying said flexible device tending to force the latter into intimate contact with the Walls of said aperture and to cause said device to present a smooth "Unbroken surface.

A11 ornamental device comprising a mat formed of thin lustrous material having an aperture presenting a contour conforming substantially to the silhouette of a natural object, a portion of a butterfly wing underlaying said aperture and a protecting cover of transparent material overlaying said mat.

An ornamental device comprising a mat formed of thin lustrous material having an aperture presenting an ornamental appearance simulating the silhouette of a natural object, a plurality of lustrous de- .vices of varying colors underlaying said aperture and associated to simulate the colors of said natural object and a protecting cover of transparent material overlaying said mat.

5. An ornamental device comprising a mat of thin mother-of-pearl having an aperture therethrough presenting a contour simulating the silhouette of a natural object and portions of butterfly Wings associated to simulate the colors ofsaid natural object underlaying said aperture.

6. An ornamental device comprising a mat formed of thin mother-of-pearl having an aperture t-herethrough presenting substantially the silhouette of a bird, portions of butterfly Wings underlaying said aperture associated to simulate the colors of a bird and a protecting cover overlaying said mat.

7. An ornamental device comprising a mat formed of thin lustrous material presenting an aperture having a contour conforming in part to the form of a natural object, a device of thin lustrous material underlaying said aperture presenting colors simulating a part of the colors of said natural object and colors superimposed upon said mat having a contour completing the simulation of said natural object.
