IMPROVEMENT IN GRADING-SCRAPERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,132, dated March 3l, 1874; applicatiin filed January 17, 1874.

' To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JONATHAN C. SMITH, ot' South Solon, in the county of h'ladison and State of Ohio, have invented a new and 11nproved Grading-Scraper, of which the following is a specication:

My invention consists of a road, ditch, or grading scraper, having the front portion, which carries the blade, jointed onto the front of the body portion, and provided with springs and pushers adapted to tilt" the blade down so as to run into the ground when the scraper is drawn along the surface also, having latches and levers combined with the said jointed front part, and the handles to turn the blade upward to run out of the ground when a load has been obtained by pressing the handles downward; also, having cams to throw thelatches into connection with the levers, and springs to throw thein out, in combination with said latches and handles, so that the blade may be turned up when the handles are pressed down, and allowing the handles to pass down below the spring-catches, to be fastened to the body .by them to raise the rear end to dump the scraper by causing it to roll over on the front end.

A is the body of the box; B, the front portion, which is jointed to the part A at D; C, the blade; E,the push-rods; and F, the springs for tilting the blade down to enter the ground; H, the levers for raising up the blade to run out of the ground; Gr, the handles; I, the latches on said handles for catching on the levers; L, the canis for causing the latches to catch the levers when the handles are pressed down; M, springs for releasing said latches from the levers when the handles pass down the inclined ends N of the ca1ns,to allow them to pass the levers for the scraper to turn over on the blade for dumping it. J represents spring-catches on the cains L for springing out above the arms Gr for raising the rear end of the scraper by lifting on the handles to cause it to catch on the ground by the blade to dump the load.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the springs F and push-rods E with the blade portion I5 of a scraper jointed to the body portion A, sub stantially as specified.

2. The combination, With the blade jointed to the body, as described, and the handles G, of the levers H, latches I, cains L, and springs M, substantially as specified.
