Be it known that I, Unvssns G. Rosa, a. citizen of the United States. residing at Desloge. in the count of St. Fr iicois. State of Missouri. have invented a no v and useful Car-Dumping Device; ann i do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear. and exact description of the invention. such as will enable others sl-rilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates tocar dumping devices. and has for its object to provide a device of this character comprising a pivoted platform onto which cars may be run in channelled traclrways in a position. whereby the weight of the cars will cause the platform. to tilt and the loaded cars move to a position where they will discharge below the platform. During the car dumping operation. empty cars carried by the channeled tracks on the opposite side of tiltable platform will be moved upwardly to a position whereby they can be discharged from the platform.

A further object is to provide means whereby the platform may be locked against pivotal movement and held in a horizontal position, thereby allowing loaded cars to be moved to positions on the platform.

l Vith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and rrangement of parts as hereinafter set fortln shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device showing cars thereon.

Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the device.

Figure 4 is a detail sectional view showing means for holding the platform against pivotal action when loaded cars are being placed thereon.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a horizontally disposed pivoted platform, which platform is secured at 2 to a rotatable shaft 3, which shaft has its ends mounted in bearings 4: of supports 5. The platform is adapted to tilt by gravity in the direoi iQD Of the arrow a, Figure 3,

under the weight of loadedcarsb disposed on the upper side thereof. Disposed at the end of the platform are conventional forms of rails 7, on which the loaded cars 6 roll to a position where their flanged wheels 8 will be received in the channels 9 carried by the platform and held between the flanges l0 thereof when the platform is rotated for dumping the car below the platform. The empty car a after moving to the position shown in Figure 3 by gravity is raised to a righted position by the weight of the succeeding full car 6, disposed on the upper side of the platform, consequently the weight of the cars ti in their loaded condition is utilized for rotating the platform. The platform is provided with channels 9 on the opposite sides thereof similar to the channels 9, however the channels are offset in relation to the longitudinal center of the platform so that the weight of the cars will be disposed to one side of the center thereby insuring the operation of the device by gravity. it is obvious that the full cars 6 will overbalance the empty cars 6 and consequently the en'ipty cars (i will be moved to a position where they may be removed from the platform onto the rails 7. After each dumping operation, the platform may be held against pivotal movement and in a horizontal. position by means of the slidable detent 11, which slidable detent is carried by one of the supports 5 and is adapted. to be forced between any of the teeth 12 of a gear 13 l-Ieyed on the shaft 3, thereby allowing the succeeding loaded cars 6 to be placed on the platform and the platform held against rotation, until it is desired to dump the cars 6 at which time the slidable detent is moved out of cooperative relation with the gear 13. The detent 11 is slidably mounted in a bracket 14 and is actuated by a lever 15 pivoted to said bracket at 16.

From the above it will be seen that an unloading pivoted platform is provided, which is simple in construction and may be operated with the minimum amount of labor and one wherein the platform is tilted by loaded cars and the previously dumped cars raised to a position where they may be removed from the platform, said raising being accomplished by the weight of the loaded cars.

The invention having been set forth What is claimed as new and useful is car dumping device device coin prising a horizontally pivoted tiltable platform, Wheel receiving channels disposed on opposite sides of said platform and adapted to receive and hold the Wheels of cars, said channels being disposed whereby the Weight of loaded cars on the upper side thereof Will rotate the platform and move the empty cars to upper position, detent means for holding the platform against rotation, said detent 10 means comprising a slidable shaft and a wheel carried by the platform and provided with a plurality of recesses for the reception of the slidable shaft.
