ivrULTIPLn-COUPLING PUMP FOR FRUIT :mns nur)l 'rr-rn LIKE.
Application filed November 14, 19.21. ,SerialNa 515,162.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, SIDMOOR S. Saone, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State ot New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Multiple-Coupling Pumps for Fruit J ars and the like, otl which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to multiple coupling pumps for fruit jars and the like and particularly to pumps tor effecting hermetic sealing ot fruit jars and other containers; and the principal object of the present invention is to provide a device ot this nature which may be used to eiiect sealing `ot jars having diit'erent sizes of tops.
Another object is to produce a device of this nature which shall be simple of construction, cheap to manufacture, and highly efficient lor the purpose for which it is designed.
Another object is to provide a pump having a plurality of suction seats and a single suction cylinder co-operative with all of the seats.
IVith these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel teatures of construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features ot' which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the device as applied to a large size fruit jar.
Figure 2 is a similar View of the same as applied to a small jam `iar.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts in all views.
In putting the pump shown in my Patent No. 1,384,780, issued July 19, 1921, on the market, it has been found that itwould be desirable to have a variety of sizes of jars such as shown in my Patent No. 1,356,224 issued Gctober 19th, 1920. Butin this case it would have been necessary to provide a diierent size pump for each size of jar, and the cost oi such procedure would render it commercially undesirable. To avoid this difficulty and still obtain the desired end, the present invention contemplates the combining of a plurality of pumps into a single structure.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the invention consists in a tubular pump casing 10 having a cap screwed on its outer end, through which passes the plunger rod 12 of the piston 13. Secured to the lower or tree end of the barrel 10 is a cupped member 11 which is formed with a flange-like shoulder 14 and an apron 15 terminating` in a flange 16. Mounted in the shoulder 1-1 and projecting therebelow is a resilient washer or seating element 17 which is removably held in its seat by a ring or annular band 18. Mounted in the flange 16 is a resilient washer or seating element 19 held in place by a ring'or band 20. The rings 18 and 2O are circular in form and L-shaped in cross-section.
In the drawing containers are shown at A and B and when it is desired to seal them the respective sealing seats 17 and 19 are placed in contact with the ar body and the pump is operated using the cover tor a valve member as described in my said prior patents. But it will be noticed that either cover may be used as the valve in the present. instance, the. element 17 being spaced tar enough above the cover when the large container is being sealed, not to interfere with the necessary slight up and down movements of the cover. While I have shown this device as applicable to two sizes ot jar, it will be readily understood that it may be made so as to co-operate with any desired number of ditterent sizes of covers, I therefore do not limit my invention to the exact details of construction herein described, nor to anything less than the entire invention limited only7 by the appended claims.
And now having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a multiple pump for fruit jars, the combination of a pump barrel, a piston mounted for operation therein to cause entrance and exit of air from the barrel, a plurality ot annular elements provided with means securing them substantially around the entrance or inlet end ot the barrel and excluding air from said inlet end except that air which passes through the annular elements, one of these annular elements being smaller' than the other and in a plane nearer the inlet end than the larger annular element, these annular elements each being provided with a clear space within and at its inner surface to permit it to be seated against the outer periphery ott' an upwardand smaller mouths of jars While retaining their positions relative to one another, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification lthis 17th day of October, 1921.
SIDMOOR S. SAGER.
