Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,982, dated March 24, 1874; application filed January 29, 1874.

Be it known that I, DAVID B.' PLAT'I, of Jeffersonville, in the county of Clark and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Hubs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a malleableiron hub, as will bc hereinafter morefully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention apperta-ins to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure lis a longitudinal section of my hub; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same through the line :c cc, Fig. l.
A A represent two circular disks, connected by means of radial partitions, forming beveled mortises B B, for the insertion of the spokes. These mortises run down to the central apertures in the disks A A, which are connected by a tube, C, the mortises running into a e'ircular space, a, around said tube. The tube C prevents the oil or grease from getting to the spokes, and forms a center journal or bearing for the axle to pass through. On the rear side of the center journal C is cast a solid washer,
b, for the shouldercz.1 of the axleE to run against. 0n each side of the center journal C is formed an oil or grease chamber, D, of suitable size, which terminate, respectively, in the journals G and H, thus giving three journals, (l G H, for the axle to run in, one in the center and one at each end of the hub. The journal G at the back end of the .hub is sufciently large to admit the shoulderx on the axle and allow the saine to run on the washer b at the back of the center journal (l, for the purpose of keeping the friction-shoulder of the axle always sufficiently oiled. On the back shoulder y of the axle is a leather washer, d, fitting into the back or end shoulder of the hub; and a washer, z, is fitted under the nut I at the outer end of the axle, which washers are only for the purpose of preventing the oil from running out. By the bevel-mortises B a solid arch-wheel is obtained with the full size of the spokes J at the outer edge of the hub. This hub can be adapted forv any sized or shaped axle, as it is cast on a core for either iron-axle or thixnbleskein wagons; and it is strong and durable.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A metallic hub having one center bearing and one bearing at each end for the arm of the axle, with an oil-chamber formed between the bearings, substantially as set forth.
2. A metallic hub provided with an oil-recess, D, upon each side of the spokes, said recess extending to the axle, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The metallic hub having disks A A, with partitions, forming beveled mortises B B, with central bearing G, and space a around the same,
Asubstantially as set forth.
4. The metallic hub having the solid washer b formed on the back end of the center bearing C, in combination with the friction-shoulder x on the axle, as set forth.
5. The metallic `hub A B, with oilchambers D D, bearings C G H, and solid washer B, all cast in one piece, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
