Description

Patented Apr. 8, 1924i UNITED STATES JOSEPH .ALFRED JOURDIN, OF TTAWA, ONTARIO', CANADA.
VVCGLILAPSRELIEF 0R ZKSI'OCIKDOIJ'` CONTAINER.
Application led April 27, 1923. Serial No. 635,097.
To all whom t may concer/n.' l
Be it known that I, Josnrn ALFRED Joon- DIN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Ottawa, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible or Knockdown Con tainers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in collapsible or knock-down containers and the objects of the invention are to provide a container in the form of cheese boxes, barrels, or, in fact, in any suitable form that can be readily collapsed and thus yeasily and economically transported in a limited space, thereby materially reducing freight charges.
Further objects are to provide a container of this kind that cannot be tampered with.
Still further objects are to provide a container formed with laced staves and interchangeable covers, that can be completely collapsed or built up at very short notice and that can be economically manufactured and placed on the market in large quanti ties at low cost.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists essentially of a collapsible container formed of a plurality of sections placed together in such manner that the lacing means are entirely concealed, thus providing a container of this character that cannot be easily tampered with.
Referring now to the drawings,in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of my device as a whole, in the form of a container.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view with the cover removed and showing the lacing means concealed within the sections of the extend through said sections by meansY of suitable holes bored therein and the loose ends of which are drawn together inwardly at 12 and secured with any suitable instru-l ment in slots 13 on the inside of the container. In this way, the strung or laced sections are when built up, as shown in Figure 1, designed to form the body 14 of the container while in knock-down position they will lie flat, thus taking up comparatively little space in transit.
15 and 16 are top and bottom removable cover members for the container and are formed in sections 17 suitably bored at 18 to be similarly laced together by meansof wires 19.
V20 are fastening hooks of any well known construction adapted to hold the top and bottom covers in position.' If desired, however, these hooks may be dispensed with and the wires 11 in the containerinstead of being confined in the slots 13 can readily be brought. upwards inside the container to extend through suitable openings in the cover and then bent to hold the cover in position just as ei'ectually as if held by the hooks here illustrated.
My container 'may alsol be rovided with Ventilating means of any well) known kind, if required.
From the foregoing, it will be observed that I have provided aA simply constructed and practical means of manufacturing knock-down or collapsible containers of all kinds, in which the feature is the lacing of the sectionsl composing the container together by-stringing them on wires. Another feature is that the sections being so strung or laced and the loose ends of the wires concealed within the container, the means of connecting and building up the device are entirely concealed and consequently not easily tampered with nor are they affected,
by exposure, to rust or otherwise.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention within the scope of the claim, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specifications and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
A collapsible container or the like comprising a plurality of sections suitably bored and provided With flexible securing means being .carried through thev .cover means and through sind bores adapted to lace the men1- then bent to hold the covers 1n posltlon.
bers together to form a body portion, ,top En witness whereof l have hereunto Set 10 and bottom cover means for said body pormy hand in the presence or" a Witness.
5 tion comprising sections similarly bored and JOSEPH ALFRED JGURDIN.
provided with Similar lacing means therel/Vtness:
through, the loose ends of the lacing means W. T. CUFF QUIN.
