Description

l. & G. ARMSTRONG.
Plow-Golfers.
Patented Ma'rch 24, 1874.
UNITED STATES OEEIOE.
JAMES ARMSTRONG AND GEORGE ARMSTRONG, OF ELMIRA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOW-COLTERS.
Specication forming part of Letters PatentNo. 148,915, dated March 24, 1874; application filed December 22, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Beit known that we, JAMES ARMSTRONG and GEORGE ARMSTRONG, of Elmira, in the county of Stark and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Golters, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention relates to certain improvements on that for which Letters Patent No. 130,17 7 were granted to us August 6,1872; and it consists in a casting attached to the under side of a plow-beam by means of bolts passing through slots, so as to allow of lateral adjustment, the toothed bar of a colter being raised and lowered by means of a hand-lever attached to a toothed segment pivoted to said casting, and operated by the driver, and said casting being provided with notches for engagement with a spring-bolt on said lever, whereby the driver is enabled to instantly raise and lower the colter without leaving his seat. f
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation ot' our improvement. Fig. 2 is a rear view. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the casting. Fig. 4 is a bottom view thereof.
A represents a plow-beain of any suitable construction. R is a casting formed with a horizontal base, c', corresponding with the under side of the plow-beam, and a vertical base, corresponding with one of the vertical sides of said beam. The horizontal portion is formed with slots c c, and the vertical portion with guides d d and guide-holes d d. The casting is secured to the beam by bolts c c passing through the slots c c, by which means the casting may be adjusted laterally of the plowbeam. VlVorking vertically in the guide-holes d d is a toothed bar, F, to the lower portion of which a caster-colter, G, is attached by means of an arm, h, so as to admit of a swivel motion. Pivoted to the casting B is a toothed segment or curved plate, K, to which is attached a hand-lever, J, extending upward within reach of the driver, and provided with a spring-bolt, t', which engages with'notches b on the upper edge ofthe casting B. i
By moving the lever J backward or forward, the driver is enabled to instantly raise or lower the colter when desired without leaving his seat. By means of the slots c c in the casting B, the colter may be readily moved to the right or left to take in more or less width of land, as desired. f l
We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The casting R, provided with notched edge b, guides d df, and a slotted base, c', substantially as shown and described, for readily adjusting the colter.
2. The Subject-matter of the foregoing claim, in combination with the segmental lever J K and colter F 7i G, substantially as shown andV described.
1n testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we hereunto affix our signatures this 17th day of December, 1873.A
' JAMES ARMSTRONG.
GEORGE ARMSTRONG. l/Vitnesses:
