Application filed December 28, 1923.
To all 'whom may concern:
Be it known that l. PETER Quinn, a citizen of the Uni Ved States, residing at Raf cine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Target, of which the following is a specification. y
This invention relates to targets and more particularly to those of the movable type capable of being toppled over by a well aimed shot.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient device of this character in which the targets are so constructed as to be toppled over by a shot and to automatically right themselves before coming again within range of the marksman.
Another object is to provide a wheel or disk carrying swingably mounted target units and so balanced as to spin rapidly by grasping it and giving it a quick turn in a manner similar to a wheel of fortune.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds7 the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed7 it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the inA veution herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention,
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a target constructed in accordance with this invention with parts broken out to disclose the interior.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the revoluble wheel which carries the target units, some of which are shown in toppled over position,-
the shaft on which the wheel rotates being shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a side or edge View of the target.k
Serial lo. 653,123.
l is shown designed to be finedly mounted on a suitable s pport and from which at the front thereof rises two standards and 3 converging toward their upper ends and having mounted thereon a bearing et in which one end of an axle is supported the other end being n'iounted in an upright back board G which is secured to the base plate 1 by upstanding lugs 7 preferably made integral with said plate.
A front board or wall 9 is mounted in front of the standards 2 and 3 and secured thereto by U-shaped clamps 8 any desired number of which may be employed and which extend through the hoard 9 and straddle the standards 2 and 3. A revoluble wheel 10 is mounted on the axle 5 between the front and back boards on ball bearings which permit the wheel to spin rapidly when a turn is imparted thereto. Carried by the perimeter of this wheel 10 are a plurality of target units 11 any desired number of which may be employed six being here shown. These units 11 may be of any desired configuration representing deer, bears7 tigers and the like and which are hingedly mounted on plates 12 fixed to the front face of the wheel rim 13. The units 11 being of a thickness to adapt them to rest on the periphery of the wheel when in upright operative position the hinge connecting them with the plates 12 being located adjacent the front face of the wheel so that when one of the units is struck y a ball or other projectile it, will topple over into the position shown at the right of Fig. 2. The representation of animals constituting a part of the unit 11 are shown mounted on a plate 14: which is hinged to plate 12 as shown in Fig. 5 and the weight of the target unit when the wheel moves downward or rather when the target itself moves down will cause it to swing by gravity over the periphery of the wheel in which position it will remain when the wheel turns carrying the units up in front of an arcuate slot or opening 9a formed in the front board 9. rhis opening 9a is concentric with the periphery of the wheel and has its lower wall 9b positioned to register with the periphery of the wheel so that when the unit 11 carried by said wheel is moved into upward position or position opposite the opening 9a the entire unit will be visible throughout the length of the opening and may be shot at by the marksi s animals wii appt-zii' 'to move up out of man sind when struck by the projectile will toppie over info the position shown at the,
right of Fig. 2 in which position it WiH ifsmun until it reaches the ioiif'ermost. point lof the Wheel shown :it l5 in Fig. 7.
