MORRIS S. FINKELSTEIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LOCK.
Application filed February 28, 1922. Serial No. 539,867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that MORRIS S. FINKELSTEIN,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to looks and especially to looks for use with doors mounted on hinges and opening outward.
The object of my invention is to provide a lock and bolt construction adapted to be operated by a key and an extra brace-bolt which is carried into locked position by the primary bolt, and thus provide a lock of exceptional strength.
Referring to the drawings which form a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of my lock construction shown partly in section and in locked position.
Figure 2 is a similar View lock in unlocked position.
Figure 3 is a side view of the construction illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.
Figure 4 is a side view illustrating a modified form.
A, indicates a portion of a door which opens outwardly, the view being taken from the inside of the door on which side the lock is located. B, indicates the lock frame and D indicates the door frame. C, indicates the brace-frame which is made of strong metal and is mounted on the door frame as illus trated, said frame comprising an opening C to receive the end of the main bolt and a plate portion C extending at a right angle thereto and preferably formed integral therewith.
The lock-frame B is provided with a suitable slot in which is located the main bolt E, which when in locked position extends into the usual recess formed in the door frame D.
The main bolt E is provided with a transverse slot E in which the upper end of the brace-bolt F is adapted to fit and be carried into a recess G formed in the lockframe, by the main bolt E in its locking movement. The lower end of the brace-bolt is located in a rectangular shaped tube I-I formed integral with the plate portion C in which it fits in sliding relation. The lock showing the I is provided with a lever I which in its rotational movement enters the slot J formed in the main bolt to move the bolt. In Figure 4 a modified form is shown in which the brace-bolt extends through an opening K formed in the plate C instead of the tube construction II. It will be seen that if the main bolt should be sawed oif on the line XX of Figure 1, the brace bolt still secures the door.
The operation is as follows:
Assuming the main bolt to be in unlocked position and the door closed: The brace-bolt is positioned as shown in Figure 2 and when the look I is operated by a key the latch I enters the slot J and forces the main bolt into locked position as shown in Figure 1, the bolt E extending into the casing D and the brace-bolt F being carried into the re cess G and under the overhanging plate G of the lock-frame thus securing the door with two bolts both of which are controlled by a single key.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new:
1. A look comprising a frame and a plate portion, said frame having a slot and recess therein, a main bolt carried by said frame, a brace bolt slidably mounted on said plate portion adapted to cooperate with said slot and recess and controlled by said main bolt.
2. A look comprising a frame and a plate portion in said frame havinga vertical slot and a recess adjacent thereto, a main bolt carried by said frame and adapted to be operated by a key, a right angle brace bolt, one arm of which is slidably mounted on said plate portion, the other arm of said bolt engaging said main bolt and cooperatingwith said slot and recess.
3. A look comprising a frame and a plate portion, said frame having a vertical slot and a recess formed adjacent thereto, and a main bolt slidably mounted on said frame, a brace-bolt carried by said plate portion and adapted to enter said slot and recess and operated by said main bolt.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 15th Al D. 1922.
MORRIS S. FINKELSTEIN.
Witness FRANK M. ASHLEY.
