Be it known that I, JOHN F. MnLToN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, have invented 5 certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms, of which the following, taken in connection with the drawing, is a description.

My invention has for its object the production of a broom of the class designed for household use, stores, oflices, factories, or in fact wherever an article of this kind is needed.

One of the objects of my invention is to 16 provide a broom having the brush formed of fibers of difierent degrees of fineness and which is so constructed that its durability is very much greater than that of the ordinary broom corn brooms.

It is also an object of my invention to so construct the head of the broom that when the fibers are set in place and the adhesive medium has become hardened, it is practically impossible to withdraw said fibers without breaking the frame of thebroom head.

Another object of my invention is to provide a broom head having a plain surface thereon upon which printed matter of any kind may be displayed when found desirable for advertising purposes or otherwise.

These and other objects of my invention will be apparent to one skilled in the art, and in the accompanying drawings I have illustrated what I now consider the preferred form of an embodiment of the essential features of my invention, and in these drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of my broom with parts broken away to show the set of the fibers,

Referring to the drawings A represents the handle of the broom which is of the usual type and which is set into a socket member, a, formed on the frame. The

broom holder B is preferably formed of metal, such as aluminum, which is light in weight, strong and durable. The holder may be made of any size suitable for the kind of broom desired, is fiat in the upper 5:; portion thereof I), having a strengthening Serial No. 506,078.

rim or rib Z) on the outer edges thereof which affords rigidity to the frame structure.

The bottom part C of the holder flares outwardly across the entire width of the broom holder and upon the inside thereof is provided with an elongated recessed portion C, within which the brush material of the broom is held. Extending entirely around the rim of this recessed portion C, is a rib 0, which is preferably formed integrally therewith for a purpose hereinafter described.

The brush of this broom is preferably formed of fiber of the length and weight desired. In assembling the fibers for the broom the central portion thereof is preferably formed of heavier and coarser fibers d surrounded by the finer fibers (1, and by this means any foreign matter may be dislodged from its place on the surface being swept more readily than with a broom head formed of fibers of the same weight and texture.

When the brush portion of the broom is assembled, it is saturated at the upper end with a suitable adhesive material while in a liquid or semi-liquid state, the fibers being inserted within the opening formed by the rib a in the recessed portion C of the broom holder.

To insert the brush portion of the broom into the recessed portion C, the fibers are compressed closely and after the upper ends of the fibers have been inserted into said recess beyond the rib 0, said fibers will spread apart and practically fill the recess above the rib. When the adhesive material saturating the upper ends of the fibers has hardened, the brush material of the broom is permanently secured in said recessed portion and holds the fibers in place indefinitely.

By constructing the broom with the coarse fibers in the center thereof as shown in the drawings and surrounding said fibers with the finer fibers d, produces a broom very practical for all purposes. The heavy, coarse fibers at the center tend to sustain the weight of the broom and also serve as scrapers for loosening the dirt, while the fine fibers d will gather up fine particles of dirt and dust and effect a thorough cleansing of the surface brushed.

The body I; of the broom head has a plain,

flat surface designed for advertising matter or may be used for any other printed matter as desired.

I claim A new article of manufacture comprising in combination a broom holder formed of metal having a central Web portion, a strengthening rib on the sides and top of said Web, the upper part of said, web portion terminating in a handle socket, the lower portion thereof having elongated recessed portion extending across the bottom edge of the Web portion, an inwardly extending rib near the edge of the recessed portion, fibers compressed Within said rib and having the ends thereof extended into the upper part of said recess, said fibers being adhesively secured together at the up per ends thereof Within the recessed portion, substantially as described.
