ALARM MECHANISM.
Application filed July 3,
To all fw hom it may concern:
Be it known that CLARENCE BAsooME, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland,Y in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, has invented new and useful'lmprovements in Alarm MechaV nisms, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invent-ion is to provide an alarm mechanism particularly adapted for use in connection with satchels or bags employed for the transportation of money, so that the runner or person carrying the Satchel may set the alarm into operation in the event of being held up. The device is designed to be operated as desired, for a short time `or to beset so as to continuouslyv operate in the event that the Satchel or bag is taken from the perso-n carrying the same, it being impossible to stop the alarm without opening the bag.
Vith this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:A
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bag or Satchel broken away to show the alarm mechanism carried therein and the actuating member exteriorly exposed for operation by the carrier.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the alarm mechanism showing the top plate removed.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional View of the structure of Figure 2 taken on the lline 2-2 of the latter.
The alarm mechanism indicated at -1 is supported in the bag 2 in a position to have the actuating member 3 exteriorly exposed for depression to effect actuation of the alarm. The alarm mechanism comprises a casing 4 which at that end carrying the gong or bell 5 is perforated 0n the side, top and bottom walls as indicated at 6, so that the gong, while protected within the casing,
may be readily heard when rung by the clapper 7 which is carried on a rock shaft 8 journaled in the opposite walls of the casing, the clapper being an integral part of a yoke 9 having its extremities engaging th-e tooth 1() of a disk 11, so that when this disk rotates the yoke will be rocked back and forth with a consequent oscillation of the clapper and the ringing of the bell. The disk 11 is carried on a shaft 12 journaled in 1923. serial No; 649,274.
the opposite Walls of the casing and this shaft also carries a pinion 13 in mesh with a gear 14 carried by a shaft 15 also journaled in the opposite walls o-f the casing, the gear 14 being actuated by a spring l16 which may, be wound bya key 17 exposede'x-te'riorlylof the casing. f Y
The actuating member 3 consists of a stem 518 telescoped in the extremity of a longitudinally movable post 19, la spring 2() being interposed between the bottom of the opening in the postl and the lower end ofthel stem to maintain the postv normally extended for the engagement of the` finger or thumb with the operating` head of atranfsverse pin 21 prevents the withdrawal of the stem from the casing. The upper extremity of the ost journaled in a yoke 22 and the lower en in a plate 23 on top of which iscarrieda compression spring 24 bearing against the inner face of the plate 23 andiagainst one face of a collar 25 which is-notched as indicated at 26 for the reception of the' deflected end or extremity 27 of an arm 28 carried by the shaft 8. The 'spring' 24 tends 'to ,impart longitudinal movement of the post 19 in the direction of the stem 18 to bring the notch 26 into engagement with the deflected end 27 of the arm 28, when oscillating movement of the shaft is precluded and thus the actuation of the arm prevented. Upon depression of the head stem 18, the collar 24 is moved laterally away from the arm 28 with the result that lthe spring driven gear 13 is permitted to operate and with it the rotation of the disk 11 and the oscillation of the.
claplper.
If the ringing of the bell is to be continued-that is, if the operation of the device is to be made continuous so that it may not be stopped until the bag is opened,de pression of the member 3 further than is necessary merely to release the arm 28 from engagement with the collar is necessary, when the collar engages the latching nose 29 of a bell crank lever 30 pivotally mounted on the plate 29, a flat spring 31 serving to move the latching nose in the direction of the collar. In order that the operation of the device may be'stopped upon the opening of the bag, an exteriorly exposed operating member 32 is provided and. slidably mounted in one Wall of the casing 1, the extremity of its stem bearing upon the extremity of the bell-crank lever to rock the latter in a direction opposite to that in which it is moved by the spring 31 When the latching nose Will be disengaged from the collar to permit the spring 29 to move the post to reengage the notch 27 With the deflected end of the arm 28.
In order that the alarm mechanism may be actuated in the event that the satchel or carrier With which the device is connected is grabbed from the hand of the carrier, the handle 35 by which the device is carried and which is maintained normally in upright position is spanned by a tubular member 36 enclosed Within which there is a contractile spring 37 terminally connected to one end of the tubular member o1' barrel and to a plunger from Which depends an arm 38 which traverses slot 39 formed in the Wall of the barrel directly above the casing 4. The arm 38 is provided with a fan-shaped head which, when the spring37 is permitted to operate, engages the actuating member 3 and effects depression of the same With the consequent operation of the alarm, l/Vhen the device is being carried,
' the handle 35 rests in the palm ofuthe hand and the fingers encircle the tubular member or barrel 36 and are thus engaged with the barrel after the plunger carrying the arm 38 has been removed to the remote end of the slot. The lingers then prevent the movement of the arm toward the inner end of the slot but should the Satchel or device be grabbed from the hand of the carrier, the spring 37 is free to operate and eect depression of the actuating member 3 by movel ment of the arm 38.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is l. A device for the purpose indicated comprising an oscillating clapper and means for operating the same, a shaft on which said clapper is mounted, an arm carried by said shaft, a longitudinally movable post and means for imparting movement to the saine, a spring opposing the movement of said operating means, a collar carried by the post and provided with a notch for engagement with said arm, a latchmember for engage.- ment With said collar to maintain the post continuously in a position Where the collar is disengaged from the arm, and means for releasing said latch.
2. An alarm mechanism comprising an being provided with a longitudinal ,slot
through which said arm extends.v
In testimony whereof he afiXes his slgnature.
