inane FRANK YOUNG, or PHOENIX, ARIZONA.
CLOTHESPIN.
Application filed May 12, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phoenix, in the county of Maricopa and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothespins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in clothes pins and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character provided with a hook member adapted to be directly engaged with a clothes-line or the like and which also embodies means to effectively support the article of clothing to be dried.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character formed from a single strand of material and which embodies means to effectively hold the clothing and with means to support the same from a line or the like.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved clothes pin whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective illustrating a clothes-line pin constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, an associated line and clothing being fragmentarily indicated by broken lines;
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation of my improved pin as herein embodied, a second position of certain of the parts being indicated by dotted lines; and a Figure 3 is a view in top plan of the pin as herein set forth.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, my improved clothes pin is formed Serial No. 638,551.
from a single strand of spring or resilient material preferably twelve gauge galvanized Wire and bent upon itself to provide the elongated arms 1 having adjacent ends connected by an intermediate member 2. The end portion of one of the arms 1 is continued by the inwardly inclined reverted arms 3 providing a space therebetween for the passage of the free end portion of the second arm 1. The movement of the second arm 1 in a direction away from the first arm 1 is limited by contact with the connecting or intermediate portion 4 of the reverted arms 3 and the free end portion of said second arm is returned to provide a downwardly and inwardly facing hook member 5. The free end portion of the reverted arms 3 is inwardly coiled as at 6 to prevent injury to the clothing with which the pin is engaged and also to increase the esthetic value of the device.
The hook member 5 is inwardly ofiset as at 7 with respect to the second arm and said offset 7 being immediately adjacent to the reverted arms 3.
In practice, the hook member 5 is engaged over the clothes-line L or other support and the article of clothing to be suspended for drying has a marginal portion clamped between the second arm 1 and the connecting or intermediate portion 4 of the arms 3, said clamping action being eifectively maintained by the inherent resiliency of the spring or second arm 1.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a clothes pin constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it Will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim A clothes pin formed of a single strand of material comprising a pair of arms connected at adjacent ends, the free end portion of one of the arms being continued by intion of the reverted arms, said hook memwardly inclined reverted arms, the free end her being inwardly ofiset, said offset being portion of the second arm extending between positioned adjacent to the lower or outer 10 the reverted arms and terminatingin an inend' portions of the reverted arms.
5 wardly facing hook member, said second lid-testimony whereof I hereunto affix my arm possessing inherent resiliency and consignature. stantly urging toward the intermediate por- FRANK YOUNG.
