ELECTRIC BED WARMEE.

To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, ROY W. BInnLEooM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glendale, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Electric Bed Warmer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to electric warming devices such as bed warmers or foot warmers.
It is an object of my invention to provide a warming device of this character in which an incandescent electric light globe is employed as a heat generating element.
It is a well known fact that incandescent light globes generate heat in proportion to the wattage consumed and, if well insulated, may be employed as foot warmers or bed warmers. Difliculty is encountered, however, in the use of electric light globes as warmers due to the danger of the globe overheating from lack of circulation of air therearound for dissipating the heat gen erated and a fire being started.
It is an object of the invention to provide an electrical warming device employing a light globe as a heat generating element which will be absolutely safe and which is ventilated in such a manner that overheating cannot occur.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device of this character in which the light globe employed is limited to a predetermined size without reducing the volume of heat dissipating air within the shell thereof.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a simple form of construction which permits a light globe to be quickly and easily replaced.
It is a further object of'the invention to provide a warming device of this character having an insulating cover for'preventing direct contact with the shell thereof, this insulating cover consisting preferably of a cloth bag drawn over the shell and closed therearound by a drawstring.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a warming device having a metal shell which provides ample strength and which shell is also coated with an insulating material, preferably a coating of insulating paint, which prevents contact of the Serial 1T0. 615,708.

The especial advantages of my invention and further objects thereof will be made evident hereinafter.
Referring to the drawing which is for illustrative purposes only,
Fig. 1 is a perspective elevation of a preferred form of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the device shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section taken upon a plane represented by the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In the preferred form of the invention shown, I employ a cylindrical metal shell having a cylindrical side wall 11, a bottom wall 12 and a top wall 13. The wall 11 is provided with perforations 14 and an opening 15 is formed in the bottom wall 12 through which air may circulate. The top wall 13 is secured by the rolled edge 17 of an annular member 18 which is stamped from sheet metal and is provided with a rolled thread 19 formed concentric with the opening 21 in the end wall 13. A cap 22 constituting an attachment member, and having a socket 23 mounted in the center thereof, is provided with rolled threads 24 adapted to engagement with the threads 19 of the annular member 18 which constitutes a part of the shell 25. The light socket 23 has the receptacle 26 thereof pointed inwardly as shown in Fig. 2, so that the light globe 27 will project through the opening 21 into the interior of the shell 25.
I It will be noticed that the chamber enclosed by the shell 25 is considerably larger than the light globe 27 so that an ample volume of air may be contained therein which circulates within the interior of the shell and through the openings 14: and 15 therein, thus carrying the heat to the exterior and preventing the overheating of the light globe 27 which would have the effect of shortening the life of the filament 28 thereof. The shell 25 and the cap 22 are both coated with an insulating paint which prevents the metal parts constituting the shell from being electrically conducted in case of breakage of the electrical parts. To prevent the contact of the person of the user with the metal parts of the warming device, I provide covering members consisting of preferably a small cloth bag having an opening 31 in the end thereof and adapted to be pulled down over the socket and the key 32 of the socket projected through a lateral opening 33, and a cloth bag 35 having a draw string 36 in the upper edge 37 thereof which is slipped over the shell 25 from the bottom and the edge 37 drawn in over the cap 22 and above the mouth of the small bag by drawing in the draw-string 36, as shown in both Figs. 1 and 2.
A very essential feature of my device is the provision of a means for preventing the over heating of the warmer by limiting the size of electric globe which may be employed therewith. This is accomplished by forming the opening 21 to a size permitting the passage of a light coming within a maximum allowable wattage as determined by the diameter thereof, thus preventing the employment of a large globe which would generate more heat than the shell is designed to dissipate. The construction of the device prevents the use of a globe other than inserted through the opening 21 provided therefor. It is, therefore, impossible to employ an incandescent globe of greater size and of greater heat generating capacity than th shell is designed to accommodate.
The warming device herein described will be seen to be very simple in construction and therefore may b manufactured and placed upon the market at a reasonable price. It will be further recognized that the device is fool-proof in its nature, and no danger of conflagration is encountered in its use.
I claim as my invention:
1. In an electrical warming device of the class described, the combination of: a cylindrical shell having an opening in one end thereof through which a lamp of limited size may pass, and ventilating openings for circulation of air through said shell; a cap screwed upon said shell in a position to cover said opening; a lamp socket secured in said cover with the receptacle opening thereof in communication with the inside of said cap; an incandescent globe in said socket and extending into said casing; and an insulating air permeable covering enclosing said shell and said socket.
2. In an electrical warming device of the class described, the combination of: a cylindrical shell having an opening in one end thereof through which a lamp of limited size may pass, and ventilating openings for circulation of air through said shell; a. cap screwed upon said shell in a position to cover said opening; a lamp socket secured in said cover with the receptacle opening thereof in communication with the inside of said cap; an incandescent globe in said socket and extending into said casing; and an insulating air permeable covering enclosing said shell and said socket, said covering consisting of a cloth bag covering the extending portion of said socket and a larger bag placed over said shell from the bottom and having the top edge thereof drawn in over the top of said shell and enclosing the lower edge of said bag covering said socket.
3. In an electrical warming device of the class described, the combination of: a cylindrical metal shell coated with a non-electrical conducting paint and having an opening in one end thereof through which a lamp of limited siz may pass, and ventilating openings for circulation of air through said shell; a cap screwed upon said shell in a position to cover said opening; a lamp socket secured in said cover with the receptacle opening thereof in communication with the inside of said cap; an incandescent globe in said socket and extending into said casing; and an insulating air permeable covering enclosing said shell and said socket, said covering consisting of a cloth bag covering the extending portion of said socket and a larger bag placed over said shell from the bottom and having the top edge thereof drawn in over the top of said shell and enclosing the lower edge of said bag coveringsaid socket.v
