LOCK NUT.
Application filed. January 27, 1923. Serial No. 615,345.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. CoLLrNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tad, in the county of Kanawha and State of West Vir inia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Look Nuts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lock nuts and has for its object the provision of a combination consisting of a bolt having oppositely threaded portions upon which are engaged nuts, means being provided for engaging both nuts and preventing relative rotation thereof after they are applied.
Another object is the provision of a lock nut of this character in which the locking means consists of a resilient peculiarly formed spring washer which co-operates with both nuts for positively preventing them from movement.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which is capable of use in a multiplicity of arts, which will be highly eiiioient and durable in use, positive in its holding action and a general improvement in the art.
vVith the above and the other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring more particularly to the drawings the numeral 10 designates a bolt which has one portion 11 formed with right hand threads and which has its end portion 12 reduced and provided with left hand threads. In conjunction wtih this bolt I provide a relatively large nut 13 which is screwed upon the right hand threaded portion 11 and which has its outer face formed with recesses 14. Screwed upon the reduced left hand threaded end portion 12 is a relatively small nut 15 which has its inner face formed with ribs or teeth 16. The means for locking the nuts together consists of an elongated spring washer 17 of any desired size and here illustrated as having a length equal to the width of the large nut 13 and having its ends formed with projections 18 seating within the recesses 14 in such manner that the central portion of the washer will be spaced away from the outer face of the large nut. The outer surface of this washer is formed with a plurality of notches 19 for receiving the projections of ribs 16 on the nut 15.
In applying my device, the bolt 10 is inserted through whatever objects or pieces of material are to be held, and the nut 13 is applied and screwed down tightly on the right hand threaded portion 11 of the bolt. The washer 17 is then slipped over the reduced end of the bolt with its projections 18 fitting within the recesses 14, after which the nut 15 is applied upon the left hand threaded portion and screwed down tightly against the washer 17 Owing to the fact that this washer is resilient, it is apparent that the teeth or ribs 16 will slip into the successive notches 19 in the washer until the washer has been thoroughly compressed, whereupon the outward strain exerted by the washer upon the nut 15 will operate to prevent any possible displacement, that is: relative rotation of the nuts. When the device is applied as above described it will have a most eflicient holding action and will naturally recommend itself for use in a multiplicity of arts and for a wide variety of purposes.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. In combination, a bolt having oppositely threaded portions, nuts screwed onto said threaded portions, and an arch shaped washer located between the nuts and formed with lugs at its ends, one nut being formed with recesses receiving said lugs, the other nut having its face toward the washer formed with a rib, and the confronting side of the washer being grooved to receive said rib.
