Be it known that I, MAX ZIEHLKE, a eitizen of the United States, residing at Linton, in the county of Emmons and State of North Dakota, have invented a certain new and u:eful Door Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide 21 door fastener of simple, durable, and comparatively inexpensive eonstruction, whereby it may be manufactured and inarketed at a comparatively lOW oost.
More partieularly, my invention 1elates to a door fastening device for locking slid ing doors used in barns, garages, warehouses, and the like.
Still a further object is to provide a locking structure for sliding doors Whi0h, when removed, will not interfere with the sliding movement of the doors'.
With these and other objeots in view, my invention consists in the construction, ar-
rangement and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinsfter more fully set 'ortl1, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying draw ngs, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a. portion of a building with a pair of sliding doors shown thereon with my improved door fasteners.
Figure 2 is a seetional view taken on line 532 of Figure 1.
Figure 8 is a sectional view taken on line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a front elevation of the strap melnber forming 2. part of my fastener.
In the accompanying drawings, I have used the referenee numeral 10 to indicate generally the walls of a building. A pair of sliding door members 11 end 12 are provided, whieh are suspended from a track 13 by means of rollers 14.
A door fastener device is used for each of the door members 11 and 12. In the W&ll 10 adjaeent to the sides of the doors 11 and 12, I provide EL recess 15 f0r receiving t keeper 01 02115011 member 16. The catcl1 1116111- ber is seoured in position by means of the serews 17.
The upper surfaee of the catch member is substantially fiush With the outer suriaee of the wall 10 so that when the doors 11 and Serial No. 629,305.
12 are slid to their open position, the catch member will not interfere therewith.
Fixed at the door members 11 and 12 are the hooks 01 staples 18. A strap member 19 forms the main part of my door fastener and eooperates with the keeper 16 or completing the door fastener. The strap niember 19 is provided with a portion 20 arranged at right angles to the main part of the strap 19.
The portion 20 terminates into a curved portion or hook member 21. The hook member 21 is designed to coa.ct with the catch 01 keeper 16 as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The strap member is provided with a slot 22 through whieh may be extended the hook 18. The strap member 19 has an inclined portion 23 to which is secured a chain or other suitable flexible element 24. The free end 0 the ehain 24 is secured to the door by means of a. staple 25.
In this connection, it may be mentioned that a complete door fastener is used for eaoh of the door members 11 and 12.
The stra.p member 19 has a looking element 26 thereon Wl11Ch is pivotally mounted on the rivet 27. The loeking element 26 is provided With a finger engaging piece 28. The locking element 26 is designed to extend into the hook 01 staple 18, as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the dravvings.
I will 110W desoribe in detail the operation of my door fastener. The strap member 19 Whieh forms one part of the fastener is segured to the door 11 by means of the ehain The strap member is moved to the posi tion shown in dotted lines in Figure 2 of the drawings, and when in this position, the hook member 21 may be slipped in position under the keeper 16. The loeking element 26 is then in the position shown in Figure 4 of the dravvings.
The strap member is then moved towards the door so that the staple or hook 18 will project through the slot 22. The locking element 26 is then moved so that the hook portion thereof will project into the strap 18. The right a.ngle portion 20 will rest against the edge of the door member.
/Vhen the locking element 26 is in elosed position, then the entire strap member will be held against undesired movement and -ne catch membe1 and hoek 21 Will cooperue f01 holding the door closed.
In this connection, it may be mentioned that a look may be extended over the steple 18 after the strap lnemhe1 19 is in position, (LS shown in Fignre l, fo1 holding the stmp member in position.
