er ser WILLEM A. ZAHN, OF PITTSBURGH, IPENNSYLV BUILDING BLOCK.
Application filed March 31, 1922. Serial No. 548,326.
To all whom 'it may concer/n.:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM A. ZAHN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Building Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to certain improvements in cement building blocks and the important objects thereof are toisupply a block of the type stated, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, which provides for an interlocking connection of adjacent blocks, preventing shifting of the block, as a unit, in any direction or manner and providing for the erecting of a structure substantially indestructible.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of the character stated,
which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable and efiicient in its use, readily positioned and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
To the accomplishment of these and such other objects as may hereinafter appear the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein specifically described and illustrated S0 in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
' ln the drawing forming a portion of this specification and wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a building block in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of a .plurality of positioned blocks illustrating their interlocking connection.
Referring in detail to the drawing l denotes the body portion of the building block molded or formed of any suitable material. One side edge of the body portion 1 is provided with an inset 2, disposed centrally inf termediate of and formed by the body extensions 3, one of which is integrally connected with each end of the body portion 1. The entire face of the end walls including the end walls of the body extensions 3, are formed with vertically extending corrugations 4, while the entire face of the side wall of the inset 2 and sideJ walls of respective body extensions 3 are formed with horizontal corrugations 5.
rlhe width of the body extensions 3 is slightly less than one-half of the length of the inset 2, for the purpose of allowing the body extensions 3 of adjacent blocks to be positioned therein, as is clearly shown in Figure 2, of the drawing. Sufficient clearance, as indicated at 6, is provided for mortar or the like.
It will be noted that when my improved blocks are positioned, as illustrated in Figure 2, longitudinal movement thereof is prevented by the interlocking engagement of the blocks; lateral movement is prevented by the joint material embedded therebetween and in the vertical corrugations 4, and vertical movement by the joint material binding the wall of the inset 2 to the opposed faces of the side walls of adjacent body extensions 3 in conjunction with its engagement with the horizontal corrugations 5 formed on said faces and the wall of the inset 2.
.A structure built with my improved building blocks will be securely bound together and capable of shifting only as a whole, providing for a practically indestructible structure. By alternating the first course of blocks laid with blocks of one-half the thickness of the regular blocks, the latter will be positioned in vertically staggered relation relative to each other, and the stability of the structure is appreciably enhanced.
What I claim is building block comprising a body portion having one side edge thereof provided with an inset formed by a body extension integrally connected with each end of said body portion, the faces of the end walls of the said body portion and of the body extensions being formed with vertically disposed corrugations, and the face of the side wall of the inset and the side walls of respective body extensions being formed with horizontal corrugations, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
n testimony whereof I aix my si ature l WILL IAM A. z HN.V
