BY A. CURIE, ONE-F TOT IPQTIUN @F e ACEIUSETTS.
ASSIGNOE, BY HNE ASSIG Il 0F A COR- Application ied August t?, '1919. Serial No.
To all wwm it may concern:
Be it fknown that l, HARRY A. Coram, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, county o Cook, and State or lillinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Roofing Froducts, or which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to an improved roofing product, and has for its object to produce embossed paper or which has been saturated or impregnated with asphaltum or other bituminous substance and which may or may not have aY ranular surfacing. llt also concerns the hollow pocket beneath the embossed part which may be lilled to maire the lower side of the roofing a smooth surface. Another feature of my invention is the mode of laying the roofing strips.
Another important obj ect ot the invention is to rovide an embossed rooting material which has the appearance of shingles, tile or the like and furnishes a mode of laying these rooting strips which is less ditlicult than the dat roofing strips and can be more permanently atlixed due to the lower edge of the strips abutting the upper shoulders of the embossed portions oit the strips below, making a more unied combination or assembly.
The roofing herein disclosed consists o? pliable units cut from a sheet in which are impressed or stamped raised portions which have the concave indentures "ormed on the under side of the sheet filled with an adhesive substance such as asphalt or other bitumens. rl`he hardening of the adhesive substance in the indenture prevents the ilattening of the raised portions which appears on the upper surface of the shingle units and assists materially in laying the shingle. rlhe asphalt which is pressed on the sur ace of the sheet roduces a distinct design which may be ma e to resemble a shingle design of any type. rllhe sheet may be covered with anular surfacing.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of section ot roofing as applied.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on irre lar dotted line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking in irection of the arrows.
felt roofing material Fig. 3 is a plan view ot section ot roong shown.
Fi d is a sectional view taken on a broken line similar'to that shown in Fig. l.
Fig. 5 is a detailed view oi rooting strip surfaced with granular material.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view along lines 6--6 of Fig. 5, viewed in direction of arrows.
Fig. 1 is a section of laid roong, the arran nient ot the strips being the saine as in ig. 3, except that these top ot each strip used to fit there. to ether as shown in Fig. 3. Fach strip in bot Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 overlaps the one below it and has its lower edge 21 abutting upon the upper shoulders 21a ofthe embossed portions -t oi the strip below, thus mali-ing a very ri 'd assembly.
n Fig. 5 1s an embossed granular, surfaced rooting strip 22. The dark shaded portions 23 are caused by the bosses on the bed roll, forcing the asphaltic substance through the rooing material, giving the top surface on the embossed parts a darker color than the surrounding material.
ln Fig. 6, the pocket arts ot the strip is shown in crow section -lled with material 2li, (preferably asphaltic) melting a smooth under surface on the strip.'
'll`hel invention is not limited to the details of this particular product except asis pointed out in the appended claims which torno a part of this specication.
l claim as my invention:
1. Prepared rooting comprising 'shingle .i
elements adapted strips have not the projections 18 and notches 1-9 near the Y under the embossed titi to overlie when placed on a root, having bossed portions formed in the sheet extending from the lower edge thereo the embossed portions ot one element being staggered relative to the embossed portions of the element above and below, the indentures beneath said embossed portions being lled with liller substance.
2. Prepared roofing composed ot shingle elements adapted to overlie when placed on a root, having an adhesive coating and a anular surface u n the coating, bossed rtions formed in the showin the coating in all throng liti@- Memor granular surface to form a design, the lower edge of one element abutting theembossed tion of the element beneath it, the emggssed portions bein g alternately staggered.
3.1% roong elem'ent'having an adhesive coating and a, granular'surface upon the coating, embossed portions showing the HARRY CUMFER.
