IMPROVEMENT IN CHAIR-BACKS. l

Specification forming part of` Letters Patent No. 148,380, dated March 10,1874; application tiled August 23, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE F. PERRENET, of Rockport, in the county of Aransas and State of Texas, have invented a new and Inlproved Chair-Back, of which the following is a specication:

The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.

Figure l is a perspective view of my improved chair-back attached to a stool and occupied by a student reclining upon one side against a table. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken on the line x of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of Fig. 2 on the line y y.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

A is a chair-back, having the extension B, and C a clamp, having a lug, G. These are connected by a ball-and-socket joint, which allows the back free play in all directions laterally. Behind the sai d extension B is a strong lug, G, rising up for it to bear against, to limit the movement of the" chair-back in the backward direction, but the back is free to move in all other directions. At the upper part of the back is a strip, H, adapted to pass round the arms at the shoulders, and button fast over each quarter, so as to hold the sitter straight up to the chair-back, and prevent the stooping forward to which students are so much inclined; and about the middle of the back, upon the inside, I have provided a vertically-adjustable pad, J, to rest the middle of the back against. This pad is fastened by a bolt and nut, K, the bolt passing through a slot, L, which 'allows it to shift up and down.

By preference, the straps will be elastic, but it is not absolutely essential.

lt is believed that by the use of this chairback--which may be attached to any bench or stool, and most chairsstudents and other sedentary persons will find greater reliefl and comfort than with any other.

This back may be jointed directly to a chair or bench, instead of the detachable block; but it is preferable to attach it to the block for the benefit of changing it from one seat to another.

Having thus described my invention, Iv claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the back A, having extension B, and clamp C, having lug G, the two united by a ball-and-socket joint, and applied to a chair or stool, as and for the purpose described.
