Be it known that I, COLIN J. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Orange, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Guide, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act specification.
This invention relates more particularly to a class of devices adapted to be` used in conjunction with electromagnets.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a guide designed to be employed for causing a diverging or inclined movement fromv a resting part of the guide of a rod or pin provided on the armature of an electromagnet especially of a type disclosed in my application for a patent, vserially numbered 17.),372 and filed the 21st day of June, 1921, which when energized will normallytend to slidably move the armature on a given. plane whereby the movement of the rod may be eflectually utilized, such as for setting' a danger signalin emergency. The invention consists essentially` of a device or guide which is arranged for carrying a rod or pin` normally movable back and forth on a given plane, and the guide has a seat on which the rod is disposed when at rest and the parts of the guide adjacent to the seat being of shapes so that the rod when operatedwill be caused to move from the seat in a diverging direction relative to the plane in which its normal movement tended. The signal which the rod and armature are mainly designed to operate will thereby assume a positive position when set to indicate a warning.
A further object of the invention is to provide a guide of a simple and eiiicient form which may be made of any suitable material in any desired size.
lith these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description. j
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a fragmentary view showing the manner of employing my improved guide in conjunction with the operation of a signal.

The device or guide is preferably in 'the form of a channel including a plate, as 10, of an approximately rectangular shape and in practice the plate is fastened to a suitable support, as 11,fso that it is arranged lengthwise under the rod or pin 12 extending over the upper lengthwise edge of the plate from the outer periphery of a disk, as 13, of an electro-magnetic conductive bar or armature 14 which is slidably operative by the energizing of an electro-magnet, as 15, back and forth on a longitudinal plane or on a `plane similar to the plane of the edge of the plate in opposition to the yrod 12. The electromagnet and armature being preferably of types disclosed in the hereinbefore mentioned application for a patent. The armature 14 is also revolubly movable to allow the disk 13 and rod 111 to be moved in diverging kor inclined directions relative tothe plane in which the rod normally tends to move when the armature is slidably operated, as will be hereinafter more fully explained, and the rod is designed especially to be connected to a suitable signal, as 16, by means of a lever 25 having an elongated longitudinal slot 2G into which the rod loosely projects, the signal and lever being rigid with a rotatable shaft 27.
The plate 10 has one or more inclined guides, as 17 and 18, and these guides are preferably formed by notching, as at` 19, the
`part of the upper edge of the plate directly under the rod 12. The notch 19 may be of any appropriate shape, though the notch shown is substantially V-shaped to provide in its bottom or apex a seat 20 in which the rod normally rests when at a standstill. The notch 19 is of a size so thatwhen the rod is moved accordingly it will be guided upwardly to and over the upper ends of one of the edges of the notch as well as being removably seatednpon one of the extensions or seats, as 21' and 22, which are provided by the straight parts of the upper edges of the plate adjacent to the upper ends of the notch so that these extensions protrude on longitudinal alinement in opposite directions from the edges of the notch. Thus when the armature 14: is operated for being slidably moved in a given direction on a longitudinal plane the guides or edges 17 and 18 of the notch 19 will cause the rod 12 to be moved in a diverging or inclined direction as well as causing a rotary movement of the disk 13 and armature 14. Vhen the rod 12 has passed the upper end of the edge of the notch 'on which it moves the rod will move upon the extension or seat 21 or 22 adjacent to this edge of the notch, and the rod will then be releasably held on the extension during the energizing of the magnet for causing the signal to be positively set in the direction intended according to its operative relation with the rod 12.
In the yforegoing description, I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall Within the scope thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a signal wherein a signal member and a longitudinally slotted lever are fixed upon a rotatable shaft, and wherein the sig nal is rotated by means including a longitudinally reciprocable and axially rotatable member having a laterally projecting rod fixed thereto and loosely engaged in the slot of the lever, a guide adapted for association with said rod to automatically cause swinging of the latter and partial rotation of its longitudinally reciprocable member upon reciprocation of said member.
2. A device like that described in claim 1 wherein the guide embodies diverging guide surfaces terminating in rest surfaces lying parallel with the plane of movement of the reciprocable member arranged to receive the rod thereon for retaining the signal member when swung to predetermined signalling positions.
3. The combination with a rotatable shaft having a signal member and a longitudinally slotted lever fixed thereon, a reciprocable member having a lateral rigid rod engaging in the slot of the lever for causing rotation of the vsignal member upon reciprocation of the reciprocable member, of a guide associated with the rod for causing swinging movement of the rod upon its reciprocation, said guide including an inclined guide surface terminating in a flat rest portion arranged with respect to the signal elements to form a substantially positive stop for retaining the signal in a predetermined signalling position.
l. A device like that described in claim 2 wherein the guide embodies a channel shaped element with parallel flanges, and wherein one of the flanges embodies diverging portions forming guide surfaces.
