IMPROVEMENT IN CIGAR-BUNCH MACHINES.

Be it known that I, EMILE DEUTSCH, of Chicago, in the county of Oook and Statc of lllinois, have inventecl an Improvement in Machines for Making Oigar-Bunches, of whicl1 thc following is a specification:

This invention relates to a maohino by means of whioh cigar-bnnches may be accurately and rapidly formed and boundthat is 130 say, the bunch may be 10116t12b11d the binder l'un on it by a single movement of a treadlc, whence tl1e buncl1 goes into a press-mold preparatory to rnnning on the wrapper. 'lhe invention consists in tl1e peculiar construction and arrangement 0f principal parts cmployecl in the operation of rolling the binders, all as 1nore fully hereinafter set forth.

In the drawing, A rcpresents a rectangnlar table 1nountcd on a suitable fran1c or legs, and having seourecl to its under sidc a pair ot pondent braokets or hangcrs, B, in which is journaled a rock-shaft, O, having an arm, D, connected by a rod, E, to a treaclle, F, pivoted in the 1ower part of the fra1ne. G is a segment-shaped block, securcd to tl1e tablc-block in the raclius of tl1e axis cf the rock-shaft O, to which arc secured two arms, H, which vibrate in a slot at cach sidc of the block G, their upper cnds having journalcd in the1n thc cnds of the roller I. The end of tl1e block next the opcrator is rounded away bclow thc arc of tl1e remainder, and tl1e upper snrface is COV- cred with a shcet-metal plate, which terminates in front in a filler-receptacle, a, in whioh is securccl a metallic filler-gage, b, by means of set-screws c, tapped through the bottom of thc receptacle a. J is an apron or band of shect-ruboer, or othcr thin flexible, but strong, matcrial, one cnd of whicl1 is securcd nncler tl1e back edgc 'of the sheet 1netal whicl1 covers tl1e block. lho other end is socured to a (lrum, K, journaled in brackets on thc table in front of the block. 011 one ond of tl1e roller is a ratchct, (l, witl1 whioh engages a spring-pawl, e, sccured underncath and working through a slot in tl1c table, tl1e pnrposc of whicl1 is to put a proper degrec of tension 011 tne bunch whilc it 1's being rollecl. lf thorc happens to bc a little more than tho average volun1e of filler in the bunclx, tl1o spring-pawl will y ield a littlo, so that it will not bc rolled too tiglit, or tight enough to prcvcnt it fron1 drawing frccly when smokecl. Thc apron is passecl fi onn the back encl of tl1c block undcr and aronnd the rollcr I; thence ovcr the block ancl nnder tl1e strctchcr-drum. At thc sides of the block are receptaclos for filler and bindet Stock, anal bcl1incl it anotl1er for finished bnnches.

In operation, tl1e bunclr-makcr placcs thc requisite quantity of fillcr 011 t-hc apron over tl1e filler-gage, pressing down the apron into the gagc. Between tl1c crown ancl the forcpart of the block he placcs a bookcd 01 dampened bindcr-loaf on thc apron, Depxcssing the toc ot' the treadlc, thc rollcr I is carricd over tl1e top0f tl1e block, the apron rolling the binder 011 tl1c filler, and discharging the buncl1 at the back encl of the block. Reversing tl1e trcaclle, the opcration 1nay bc repeated. Tl1e bunches are tl1en placcd in prcss-molds, prcparatory to having thcir wrappers rollc l 011.

'lhe combination of thc rook-shaft O, acta atccl by a treaclle 01 otl1cr motor, thc block G, arms H; roller I, filler-rcccptacle a, fillcr-gagc b, and flexible apron J, substantially as and for thc pnrposc sct forth.
