PEARL Y. SMILEY AND FREDERICK W. KNIBBS,`OF KITCHENER, ONTARQ CANADA.
FOOTWEAR.
Application filed May 13, 1922. Serial No. 560,619.
To all whom t may cof/wem: 1
Be it known that we, PEARL Y. SMILEY and FREDERICK W. KNInBs, both of the city of Kitchener, Province of- Ontario Dominion of Canada; subjects of the {ing of Great Britain7 haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Footwear; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,V and exact description thereof.
@ur invention relates particularly to footwear of the class of farmers and other laborers boots or shoes and it has for its object to provide footwear of this class which will protect the wearer against cold and wet feet. To this end the invention consists of a boot for farmers and like laborers7 comprising a rubber lower portion and a soft leather upper portion united by the lower portion of the leather overlapping the upper portion of the rubber and being fastened thereto by stitching or cement; and a bulfer in the form of a rubber bead carried by the rubber lower portion and adapted to bear against the lower edge of the leather upper and present in conjunction therewith an even exterior for the purpose of preventing any obstruction pressing or stubbing the leather when in use.
A further advantage is that the bead renders the lioint between the overlapping portions substantially watertight.
For full comprehension, however, of our invention, reference must be had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters indicate the saine parts, and wherein Figure l is a sectional view of the overlapping edges of the leather upper sand rubber lower of a boot constructed according to'our invention. v l
The rubber lower portion of the body is indicated at b and the leather upper at c. The upper part of the lower portion extends up within and is overlapped by the lower portion of the upper;r and vthey are fastened together preferably by lines of stitching d.
In order to prevent any obstruction press ing up or stubbing the lower edge of the leather when the boot is being worn a buffer in the form of a rubber bead surrounding the boot is vulcanized onto the rubber lower, the top edge of the bead 7 being preferably of increased thickness and its bottom edge being tapered.
The foregoing construction enables the rubber lower portion with its rubber bead to be vulcanized before the leather upper is attached thereto in position with its lower edge abutting the top edge of the bead.
at we claim is as follows l. In a boot ofthe type described consisting of a rubber lower portion the eX- terior of which constitutes the exterior of the boot atthat part7 aV leather upper having its lower edge overlapping the exterior surface of the rubber portion adjacent the upper edge thereof, and a rubber bead surrounding the boot and havingy its top edge abutting the edge of the overlapping portion of the leather upper, said bead forming an integral part of the rubber lower portion. v l
2. 'In a bootkof the type described consisting of a rubber lower portion the eX- terior o'f which constitutes the' exterior of the boot at that part, a leather upper having its lower edge overlapping the exterior surface of the rubber portion adjacentthe upper edge thereof, yand a rubber bead surw rounding the boot and having its top edge abutting the edge of the overlapping portion of the leather upper, saidbead being of increased thickness at its top edge and tapered towards its bottom edge and forming an integral part `of the rubbervlower portion.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two witnesses.' f
