UNITED' STATES HARRY HOLBROOK, OF ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS.
STAPLING MACHINE.
i Application filed February 8, 1922.` Serial No. 534,867.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it knownthat I. HARRY R. Honuooit, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county ot' Bristol and State of l\lass.u.husetts, have invented certain new and useful*Improvements in Stapling Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The essential objects of my `invention are to provide tools, such as a set .of dies for cutting from a thin strip of sheet metal or other material tabs or fasteners with prongs formed thereon, and clinching the same upon a cai-(hbox, tube, or other desired article; to perform these combined operations, or any one or vmore of theoperat-ions prior to the clinching operation by a single. set of toolsand by a single continuous movement; and more specifically to provide a practif cable'die construction for cutting'and bending 'depending prongs in a strip, severing the? portion ot' the strip carrying the prongs together with atongue from the strip, and finally, it' desired, clinching the prongs upon a selected article; and finally to attain these objects in a compact and inexpensive struc ture. capable of' utilizing the. entire material ofthe stock strip without waste.' Other fob-,l jectsgand 'advantages will be apparentA to those skilled inthe art by an inspection of this specification.
To the above enumerated and suggested ends my invention consists insnch parts and in such combinations ot' parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure l isa front elevation of a set of tools or dies embodying my invention,
Figures 2 and 3, sections ot the same on line 2--2 of Figure 1, showing the parts in extreme open and closed positions respectively,
Fgure 4, a plan view of the lower die or receivinv member,
Figure o. a similar view of the same with the retaining plate removed,
Figure 6. a. section on line G-G of Figure 2, l
Figure 7, a` bottom 'plan view of the plunger or master-*die member,
Figures 8. S), and 10, fragmentary sections onl line 2 2 of Figure 1 showing the parts inthree different successive positions.
Figure 11, a perspective view of the blank strip in'an initial stage, and
Figures 12, 13, and 14, similar vie-ws o any suitable press; the upper member being attached to the plungerlor platen, and the lower member to the frame or lie'l, and the strip being intermittently advanced by the usual feed rolls.
yAs illustrated the lower die comprises a bottom member or block 20 having a recess 2,1 in its/forward portion in the lower portion of which is seated a plate or anvil 22 provided in its top face with spaced parallellongitudinally disposed grooves 23. yThis i plate is suitably secured by a screw 24 extending up through an opening 25 in the block and entering the plate. latter the top of the member 20 is recessed as at A2T to receive a die or cutter plate 28 which is Hush with the upper face of the member 20 `and fastened thereto by screws passingthrough holes 31 in the plate and entering threaded appertures 32 in the member 2,2. i The forward portion of this plate has an angular extension `provided with an oval rearwardly directed recess 34 forming resultant forwardly directed pointed projections 35 above the anvil. Re-
cessed in the top of the block is alongitudi-y nal guideivay 38, or two guideways in alignment with each other intercepted by the recess 21. Slidable in the guideways are forming dies 4() pivoted at their outer ends by pins 41 to arms 42 whosey opposite ends are pivote-d upon the pins 43't'ast in the rear side margins of the upper fare. of the block 20. Extending rearwardly into the front of the block and extending entirely across the same longitudinally is a slot 45 merging at itsr intermediate portion with the recess 21.
Fastened by screws 47 to the top of the member 20 is a retaining or guide plate 48 provided in its lower tace with a centrally disposed guidway 49. The lower portions ot the lateral margins ot the platey 48 are also grooved or under cut forming lateral flanges 5() above the arms 42, and walls 51 forming stop abutments. The flanges have lateral notches 54 to admit pins 55 on intermediate portions of the. arms 42. To the pins are attached the ends of a helical expansion spring 57. The plate 48 has anintermediate portion of its front edge cut away rearwardly Above they above the anvil plate forming a recess 59 which conforms to theshape of the recess 34 and fingers rl`he latter are inthe horizontal plane of the reciprocating clamping members l0 which slidably contact with oints 35.
The block 2() is provided with spaced vertical holes 6l in vertical alignment with holes 62 in the plate 48. ln retracted position the arms 42 occlude a portion ot' these holes.
Cooperating with the receiving tool or die hereinabove described. is the reciprocable plunger member or master die comprising a block 63 having in this instance an integral shank (Si adapted Jor seating in the slide of a power press. Fast in the die block 63 are guide pins 6G of cylindrical form in their upper portions and having their lower portions cut away forming:r intermediate cai'n shoulders 6T. These pins slide in the lm'l'es (3:2 and Gl of the guide plate and block. The block is provided with an opening (35 in which is retained b v a set screw (if) a punch T() having a liat operatingr Jface with a rearwardly directed semioval extension or shoulder portion T2 at each side of which are depending cutters T-l of triangular cross section terminating in triangular operating faces. In front ot' the stud portion Tt) of the die (33 the latter is cut away to Jf'orm a vertical guideway TG. rectangular in cross section in which is slidably mounted a die TT having.r a rectangular operating i'ace TS. A retaining plate T5) for this member is at.- tached to the body G3 by screws 9() and is provided with a vertical slot Si in which is slidable a pin S?, fast in the die TT. ln a vertical recess S5 in the latter is a helical spring SG with its outer projecting end pressing against die 63. and its lower end bearing against the bending die TT.
The upper tool or plunger die is vertically reciprocated while a stock stl'ip titl is intermittently advanced. lu Figure 1l the stock strip is shown in its initial l'orm having centrally ot' itsl forward end a longitudinal semioval recess Sli dividing the end into tingersfl?. terminating in point,-J tll. The blank is advanced through the guideway -ltl over the cutter plate 2H and forming dies 4() with the points 94 in the path ol'v the bending die TT which during the initial stage ot' its descent bends the points downwardly against the forward faces of the toi-ming dies to form prongs. as shown in Figure S. .\t the same time the descending cutters T4 cooperate with'the outer edges ot' the projections 35 to cut from opposite sides of the blank 9() points 95 and bend said points downwardly against the rear faces ot' the forming dies 4o, as shown in the last mentioned figure. The blank is now of the form shown in Figure 12.
As the upper tool continues its descent the cam shoulders 68 engage the inner edges of the vibratory arms 42 and withdraw the members 4t) from beneath the blank, while the punch T() will register with the recessed portion 3l ot the cutter plate :28 and sever from the strip the portion 9T thereotl which carries the prongs. This blank 9T because of the extended portion T2 of the punch cooperating with the recessed shape of the cutter plate. has a rearwardly directed tongue portion 98. and a Second resultant recess 9i in the strip D() is created. The described cutting operation is shown in Figure 9. and the fastener blank 9T is shown in Figure 13.
It it is desired to clinch the blank 9T into a card. box or other article, 100. the latter is inserted into the slot 45 transversely of the recessQl and resting on the anvil plate 22. The punch T0 as it continues its descent 'forces the prongs 9i and 95 through and past` the material 10() respectively into the grooves 23 which roll up or clinch the prongs into the under face ol the material. The die TT by virtue ot' the spring 86 yields to permit the complete descent ot the punch. and for thel same purpose the cutters T4 entei cavities 10:2 in the anvil ilate. The clinching operation is shown in l"igure 10. and the attached fastener is shown in Figure il. By inserting the material 10() more deeply than shown into the slot the prongs 95 may1 pass through rather than pasty the material.
lt will be understood that the positions of the. upper and lower tools may be reversed or may be arranged in otherethan vertical alignment: that one or more of the operations may be omitted; and that the principles may be carried out in substantially the same way in the formation and attachment of fasteners ot' other forms, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
