ANTONIO T-INO, OF
ANTITHEFT DEVICE Application filed June 6,
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AN'roNro TINo, a-citizen ofthe United States, residing at New York, in the county ofNew York and State ot' New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Antithett Devices for Automobiles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to looks and the main object is to provide a lock which will securely lock the load equalizer of an automobile engine, in such manner as to prevent an unauthorized person from starting the automobile.
Another object is to provide a look as mentioned, which is provided with means for securing the locking bolt in either locked or released position.
These and other objects will become a parent in the description below, in which similar characters of reference refer to likenamed parts in the drawing.
Referring briefly to the drawing, Figure 1 is a cross sectional view thru the lock, taken on line 11 of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a rear side elevational view of the lock with part of the cover broken away.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view thru the lock, part of the same being sectioned as indicated by the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary front elevational view of the upper portion of the lock.
Figure 5 is an elevational view of the look as applied to a load equalizer wheel.
Figures 6 and 7 indicate modified forms of locking bolts which can be used with the lock.
Describing the drawing in detail, the numeral 10 indicates the wall sections of a sub-i stantial housing which has a bottom 11 formed integral with wall 10. The lower portion 12 of the housing walls are narrowed and are provided with extension 13 thru which the screw holes 14 pass. =A cover plate 15 is inserted between the opposing walls of the housing and held by suitable screws 16.
A longitudinal locking bolt 17. mounted within the housing, slides vertically and has a plurality of notches 18 .cut into its side edge. A grip block 19 is provided at the lower end of the bolt 17 having sides 20 between Which. are formed rack teeth 21. A handle knob 22 projects from the face of the sliding bolt 17 and is used for moving the same against the pull of a tension spring 24' secured within the housing to NEW 1 031;, N. Y.
roe AUTOMOBILES;
1922. Serial No. 566,297.
normally maintain the bolt in raised or re- 26 in the'upper portion of the housing in which a. slide 27 is retained, the latter being slidably mounted between the guide, pins 28 which limit the travel of the slide horizontally. The slide has a plurality of square dogs 29 which are spaced similar to the notches 18, the latter being adapted to receive the dogs 29 when the slide is extended. A curved flat spring is secured to the keeper opposite to the dogs and normally keeps slide 27 in engagement with the locking bolt 17..
A hub 31, projecting from the face of the bottom 11, is provided with a key hole 32 which extends therethru and communicates with a recess 34 the latter being formed in the slide 27. A key 33 when inserted into the hole 32 will have its end engaged in the recess 34, and when turned in the required direction will retract the keeper and disengage the latter froin the locking bolt.
The device is preferably secured to the dash board 35 by means of screws 36 and in such position that the gear teeth 37 of the engine load equalizer wheel 38 will be aligned with the rack teeth 21 at the lower end of the locking bolt.
When the load equalizer wheel is not provided with gear teeth, a different type of locking bolt is provided and comprises a fixed hook member 39 and a pivoted hook 40, between which the flange on the hub of the load equalizer wheel is retained and prevented from rotating when in locked position.
In using the look after the same has been installed, the locking bolt is urged downwardly by finger pressure upon the handle knob 22 until the teeth 21 engage the corresponding teeth 37 of-the load equalizer Wheel 38. The keeper will automatically be urged into engagement with the locking bolt by the bolt spring 30.
In releasing the looking bolt from engagement with the wheel 38, the key 33 is inserted into the key hole 32 and turned in the required direction. In so doing the keeper 27 is retracted so that the dogs 29 slide out of the corresponding notches 18. The looking bolt 17 when released will be urged upwardly out of engagement with the load equalizer wheel 38 by the spring 24.
The bolt 15 as designed is particularly adaptable where a load equalizer Wheel, for
which the device is installed, has been interchanged for one of greater or lesser diameter. The sliding bolt 15 having a number of notches 18 thereon, Which are numerically manual means for depressing said bolt to with opposite sides of the rim of the gear,
cause engagement of the respective teeth of said bolt and gear, a tension spring normally operating to lift said bolt out of engagement with said gear, notches on side of said bolt, a slide movable transverse to the bolt, the notches of the bolt being numerically greater than the number of teeth on the slide, said notches being adapted to permit locking of the bolt at intermediate positions, teeth on said slide adapted to engage the lateral teeth of the bolt, an S-shaped spring secured to the slide adapted to urge said slide into engagement with the bolt, and key operated means for retracting said slide.
In Witness whereof I affix my signature.
ANTONIO TING.
