BURGLARPIROVOF CONTAINER.
Application filed June so, 1922. Serial No. 571,987.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, WILLIAM RIER, citizen of the United States, residing St. Louis County, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Burglarproof Containers, of which the following is a, specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof. t
This invention relates generally to containers and, more particularly, to a certain new and useful improvement in what I have designated as containers of so-called burglarproof type, the principal object of my present invention being to provide a' grip,
satchel, or other such container with means including" a missile-projector or small arm, such as a pistol or revolver, disposed within the container and readily and easily fired or discharged by the carrier of the grip for the purpose, on an attempt to obtain unauthorized possession of the container,
- either of giving an alarm or of injuring-the one who may so endeavor or attempt to obtain possessionof the grip against the W111 of the carrier.
Viththe aboveand other objects in view,
my present invention resides in the novel.
features of form, construction, arrangement, and comb nation of parts hereinafter described andafterwards pointed out in the claims: c I
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side ele-vational view of a container in the form-of a grip orsatchel equipped with an alarm or missile-projecting means embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is anenlarged fragmental view of the grip; I I
Figure 3 is an end view of the grip; and Figures 4; and 5 are enlarged fragmental views of the grip, showing some of the spring gripping members or fingers of'the small arm or pistol included in my invention. I Referring now more in detail and by reference characters to the said drawings, which illustrate a practicalembodiment of my invention, I have'sho'wn my invention in connection with a container in the form of a grip or satchel A having a body compris-r SPUR-V ject above the plane of the upper edges'of the side walls 2-2. The end extensions 4-4 are for the most'part oppositely beveled or cut-away at their side edges, as
at 55 for cooperation with oppositely swingable top-wall sections 66 hinged at a'side'edge, as at 7, to the upper edges of the side walls2-2, the cover or top sections 6 -6 being formed or provided at their other or free side edge with forwardly presented flanges 88 adapted to partly over lap when such sections are in closed position and at their'end edges with laterally presented fianges-88"adapted to overlap the beveled upper edges of the end wall extensions 44 also when the cover or topsections are in closed position. Suitably attached to the top sections 6-6, are handle members 9+9, thecover or top sections being releasably locked in closed position as by any suitable means, such, for instance, as registering eyes 1010 disposed upon the top-sections 66 and an engaging or locking hasp 111 i ,Riveted to or otherwise fixed fiatwise upon the inner face of one of the cover-sec tions 6, IS a preferably metallic plate 12,
and suitably located in spaced relation upon the plate 12,, isa plurality of complementjector preferably in the form of a revolver referably the several pairs or pistol 14. of gripping fingers 13 are relatively adjustable, as by means of slotfand pin connections 15 with the plate 12, to readily accoming or cooperating pairs of preferably modate and support revolvers or pistols of different types or sizes.
Suitably pivoted, as'at 16, upon plate 12 for rocking movement relatively' to the fire arm 14, is What might wellbe designated a substantially S-shaped lever 17 formedor provided at one end with a laterally projecting finger 18 adapted for actuating or tripping engagement with the trigger 19 of the fire-arm 14. At its other end, the lever 17 is formed preferably integrally with relatively obliquely disposed extension or arm 20 provided "at its free endwith, a transversely or laterally disposed pin or stud'2l disposed for movement in a suitably arcuated slot 22 formed in the grip or container top-section 6, as best seen in Figures 1 and 2. Suitably attached to pin or stud 21 and of a length to extend within convenient reach of one grasping the griphandles 9-9, is an apertured finger-grip of stiff leather or other suitable material, an end-wall extension 4 of the grip A being preferably cut-away and thereby apertured, as at 24, in alignment with the barrel 25 of the revolver 14. y
The revolver or pistol 14 may be of any suitable preferably repeater type. and in use or operation. it will, now readily be evident that the person carrying the grip by ncans of its handles 9 9 may by means of the finger-grip 23, in the event of a hold-up or attempt by an unauthorized person to obtain possession of the grip, quickly rockingly actuate the lever 17 and thereby discharge the revolver or pistol 14, such action being repeated as may .be required and the discharges of the fire-arm either sounding an alarm or, should, as would be natural, the grip asa whole and consequently the revolver 14; be so held that the barrel 25 of the revolver were pointed at the person making the attempt to obtain possession of the bag. resulting in bodily injury to him. Due to the peculiar shape or form of the triggeractuating lever 17, there is permitted a relatively large amount of play between the trigger 19 and the lever 17 to accommodate accidental movements of the finger-grip 23, the actual tripping of the trigger 19 being accomplished in the final movement or travel of pin 21 towards the upper end of slot 2 2.
As an additional safe-guard against unauthorized appropriation of the grip A, l preferably, as by a pair of grippers 26. removably support an obnoxiously or otfensively odorous bomb 27 within the body of the grip A and across the bullet or missile aperture 24. which bomb will be exploded on the first discharge of the revolver 14 and make it practically impossible for anyone, even the rightful owner or carrier of the grip A, to again carry or open the grip until the offensive odor released on explosion of the bomb 2 7 has entirely disappeared.
I may add that the grip A is preferably entirely of steel, exteriorly covered. and aperture 2st concealed. by leather or other suitable material, the grip or container being especially useful by bank-messengers and the like for the transportation of money. securities. or the like; and it is to be understood that changes in the form, construction. arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my new container may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.. The combination with a slotted container having a handle, of a fire-arm disposed within the container, and means for discharging the fire-arm, said means including a lever mounted for rocking movement within the container and having tripping engagement with the trigger of the firearm,
the lever having a portion disposed at the slot of the container, and a member having engagement through said slot with the lever for r cking the same, said member being disposed for gripping exteriorly of the container and adjacent the handle.
The combination with a slotted container, of a fire-arm disposed within the container, and means for discharging the firearm, said means including a lever mounted for rocking movement within the container and having tripping-engagement with the trigger of the fire-arm. an extension on the lever movable in the slot of the container, and a. gripping-member disposed exteriorly of the container and having engagement with the lever-extension for actuating the lever.
3. The combination with a slotted container, of a fire-arm disposed within the container, and means for discharging the firearm. said means including a substantiall S-shaped lever pivoted intermediate its en 5 for rocking movement within the container, an extension on one end of the lever having tripping engagement with the trigger of the fire-arm. an extension on the other end of the lever projecting for movement in the slot of the container, and a gripping-member disposed exteriorly of the container and having engagement with the second lever-extension for actuating the lever.
a. The combination with a slotted container and an explosive bomb located within the container, of a tire-arm supported within the container. the barrel of the fire-arm being disposed in the direction of the bomb, and means for discharging the fire-arm for exploding the bomb. said means including a lever mounted for rocking movement within the container and having tripping engagement with the trigger of the fire-arm. the lever having a portion disposed at the slot of the container. and a member disposed tor gripping eXt/eriorly of the container having engagement through said slot with the lever for rocking the same.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this s ecification.
LIAM W. SPURRIER.
