J. H. RODEN ELECTRIC GASLIGHTER Filed Dec. '1,
Inventor Patented Jan. 8, 1924.
UNITED STATES In H. BODEN, OI TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
ELECTRIC casnren'rrm. 1
Application filed December 1, 1922. lerial Io. 004,808.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. Roman, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of the city of Toronto, county of York, Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Electric Gaslighters, descri ed in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawingls, that form part of the same.
he principal objects of the invention are to elimlnate the dangers and inconvenience in the use of matches in the lighting of gas burners and fires of various kinds, and to devise a very simple, safe and inexpensive device which will e very easily operated.
The principal features of the invention consist in the novel construction and arrangement of parts whereby a step down :0 transformer and a ressure switch is enclosed within a smal casing which may be conveniently handled and to which is attached a tube projection carrying an electrically heated lighting element within a gs perforated guard, the whole structure being adapted for connection to the ordinary lighting A. C. circuit.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the igniter device.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of my device.
Fi ure 3 is a cross sectional view throug the line 33 of Figure 2.
It has been previously proposed to utilize an electricall heated element for igniting ases and 0t er combustibles and to transorm an alternating current to a low voltage high amperage flow and I do not claim broadly this idea. I have however produced a very simple and compact device which is herein illustrated as a shell type transformer having the primary winding 1 and secondary Winding 2 mounted on the core 3. This transformer is enclosed within a symmetrical casing 4 which may be easily held in the hand and within one end of which is arranged the push button switch 5.
The lead 8 from the flexible cord 7 is connected to the primary winding 1 and the other lead 6 from the cord 7 is connected with the contact member 14 of the switch 5. The other contact member 13 of the switch 5 is connected with the lead 9 from the other end of the primary winding.
The switch 5 is formed of an insulating block 10 secured to the inner wall of the cas1ng4 by rivets or screws 11. A oove 12 in the upper side of the block 10 houses the stationa and sprin contact members 14 and 13 w ich are firm y secured by the rivets 16 and 15 respectively.
A push button 17 is arranged in a recess 18 midway of the length of the groove 12 and projects throu h an opening in the casing 4 and is readi y ressed by the thumb or finger of the hand holding the casing. Downward pressure on the button presses the s rin contact 13 against the contact 14 and t e circuit through the primary winding is established.
One terminal 19 of the secondary winding 2 is secured to the casing 4 and the other terminal 20 extends into a metal tube 21 rojecting from one end of the casing 2. This tube is provided at its outer end with a perforated cap 22 and an insulating block 23 fitted in the outer end of the tube carries a copper stud 23 which is secured to the terminal 20 and at its outer end is connected to a nichrome wire coil 24. The outer end of the coil 24 is secured to the cap and the secondary circuit is established through the tube 21. The high ampere low voltage current heats the coil 24 to incandescence and it readily lights any combustible gas or va our.
he construction of the device is extremely compact and may be utilized where an A. C. circuit is available.
The device is a complete transformer unit requirin no interference with wiring and no insta ation of a paratus of a permanent nature and it may e moved about at will.
What I claim as my invention is 1. An electric gas lighter, comprising, a transformer having its primary connected with a current circuit, a switch in said primary circuit, a casing enclosing said transformer and switch, a member projecting from said casin and a heating element supported from sai projecting member and connected with the secondary winding of said transformer.
2. An electric gas lighter, comprising, a
small symmetrical casing to be held in the hand, a push button switch secured in said casing at one end, a step down transformer arranged. Within said casing and having flexible leads from the primary Winding, said switch being included in said primary winding, 2. metal tube secured in one end of seid'casing and having e perforated metal JAMES H. RODEN.
