Description

J. B. FREYSINGER FACING RING STRUCTURE FoR CYLINDER LOCKS Filed Oct. 30, 1.922
gwuwntoz Patented Jan. 1, 1924.
UNITED STATES 1,479,655? PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. FREYSINGER, 0F STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
FACING-RING STRUCTURE FOR CYLINDER LOCKS.
Application filed October 30, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. Fnnrsrncnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Facing-Ring Structures for Cylinder Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in facing or rosering structures for cylinder locks,-one object of the invention being to provide a structure of this character which shall embody 21 facing ring of such material as to constitute also armor means to protect the lock cylinder against penetration of a boring tool and also to provide simple and eflicient resilient means which shall insure a proper close connection between said ring and the flanged or headed end of the lock cylinder.
\Vith this and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,-
Figure l is a front View of a facing or rose ring structure embodying my improvements, and
Figure 2 is a sectional view illustrating the application of my invention to the cylinder of a lock, a portion of said cylinder being shown in elevation.
In the drawing, I have shown the body of the facing ring 1 as made in a single piece and it will preferably be composed of steel or hardened metal.
The ring 1 is made in its rear face with an annular recess 2 and the bottom of this recess forms a seat for an annulus 3 of spring metal, said annulus being provided with an annular flange 4 which lies against the wall of the recess 2 and said annulus is held in place by projecting a portion of the metal of the ring over the edge of said annular flange i as indicated at 5.
The annulus 3 projects inwardly beyond the plane of the inner edge 6 of the ring 1 and is split to provide a plurality of outwardly projecting spring fingers 7 which are adapted to bear against the rear face Serial No. 597,938.
of the flanged or headed end 8 of a lock cylinder 9 for the purpose of insuring a proper close connection between said lock cylinder and the facing ring. Since the major portion of that part of the spring annulus which projects inwardly beyond the inner edge or face portion 6 of the facing ring is split to form the spring fingers 7 it is desirable to reinforce those portions of said annulus which constitute the bases from which said fingers project, and for this purpose the facing ring is provided with inwardly projecting lugs 10 which overlie such base portions (indicated at 11) as clearly shown in Figure 1.
The steel facing ring 1 may be covered by a scalp 12 of a metal different from that of which the body of the ring is composed and this scalp may be given any desired ornamental configuration.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A facing ring structure, comprising a body member having an annular recess in its rear face, an annulus of spring metal located in said recess and projecting inwardly beyond the same, said annulus hav ing an annular flange disposed in said recess, an edge portion of the body member overlying a portion of said flange to retain the annulus in place, and spring fingers projecting forwardly from the inwardly projecting portion of said annulus.
2. A facing ring structure, comprising a body member having an annular recess in its rear face, an annulus of spring metal disposed in said recess and projecting inwardly beyond the same, tongues integral with the inwardly projecting portion of said annulus and projecting forwardly from the same, and lugs projecting from the body of the ring and disposed in front of those portions of the annulus which constitute the bases from which the tongues project.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN B. FREYSINGER. Witnesses:
STANLEY C. WHITNEY, Trros. F. RICHARDSON.
