JOHN 0. GADBERBY, F JOILIN, MISSOURI.
SOCKET WRENCH..
Application led. August 10, 1922. Serial No.1580,941.
To all whom t may concern: retaining member is arranged on a squared 55 Beit known that I, JOHN O.' GADBERRY, end. As shown, the retaining member cona citizen of the United States, residing at sists of a piece of resilient metal -having a Jo 1in, in the county of Jasper and State base portion 6, extending across the squared 6 of issouri, have invented certain new and end and secured thereto by a screw 7 The useful Improvements in Socket Wrenches, ends of the retaining member project be- 00 of which the following is a specification. yond the sides of the squared portion, as This invention relates to Wrenches, and at 8, and are then extended inwardly, as morepartieularly to socket wrenches. at 9, the angular portions 8 and 9 forming 10 In the present invention, I provide a a substantially V-shaped member. As
socket wrench having a plurality of intershown, the angular portion 8 is connected 65 changeable sockets, and means for retain to the base by a portion 10, arranged at in the sockets in position on the handle. right angles to the base portionand subhe retaining means consists of a squared stantially in alinement with the sides of l5 portion on the handle, adapted to be received the squared end. A plurality of sockets'are in a squared portion ofthe socket and a provided, the sockets having openings, of 70 l spring to retain the socket in position, to different sizes and being adapted to be arpermlt removal when desired. ranged on the squared portion of the handle. In the present construction, I provide a In Figure 3 of the drawings, I have shown spring consisting of a portion extending a set of sockets 11. Each of the sockets conover the squared end of the handle and sists of a central portion 12 havingasquared 75 having V-shaped ends projecting beyondthe opening 13 of substantially the same diamsides of the handle. eter as the squared portion ofthe handle and An object of the invention is the proviprovided with end portions 14 which are sion of awrench of this character, which will shown hexagonal in shape, vadapted to rebe simple in construction, and cheap to manceive hexagonal nuts or bolt heads. It is, of 80 ufacture. Y course, apparent that the ends of the socket A further object is the provision of a members maybe shaped as desired. As wrench having interchangeable sockets shown, in Figure 2 of the drawings, the two which may be readily'removed and replaced. ends of each socket are provided with dif- In the accompanying drawings, `I have ferent sized openings, whereby two sized 85 shown one embodiment of the invention. this showing: A socket member is adapted to be ar- Figure 1 is aside elevation, ranged on the opposite end of the handleA Figure 2 is a similar view on an enlarged portion, free to rotate thereon, forming ascale, parts being shown in section, hand grip. The handle member l5 is 90 Figure 3 is an end elevation of a numsubstantially similar in construction to the ber of interchangeable sockets, socket members 11, and is provided with Figure 4 iS a. transverse Sectional View a sloping outer surface 16. This member on line 4 4 of Figure 2, is provided with hexagonal openings 17 at4 Figure 5 is an end elevation of the handle each end, and a squared intermediate opeii- 95 with the socket in position, ing 18 to permit it to be used as a socket Figure 6 is a transverse sectional view member when desired. AThe end 3 of the on line 6-6 of Figure 2, and, brace or handle is provided with an enlarge-- Figure 7` is a perspective view of one ment 19, adapted to engage the shoulder end of the Wrench showing the socket re- :formed between the squared portion of the 1100 moved. opening 'and one of the socket portions' to' Referring to the drawings, the reference limit the inward movement of the handle numeral 1 designates the handle which is member.. This end of the handle is proprovided with a brace portion 2 having an vided with a retaining member. 6, identical end 3 arranged in alinement with the main in construction with the retaining member 105 portion of the handle. The lower end of heretofore described and adapted to operate the handle is provided with a slightly enin the same manner. larged portion 4 and a squared end 5. A The operation of the device will be apthe same, and
.8 of the retaining parent from the foregoing descrip-tion. When a socket member is to be placed on the handle, it is forced inwardly, riding over the inclined portions 9 of the retaining member, to the position shown in the drawings. When in this position, the socket member is retained on the handle with sufiicient force to prevent accidental displacement. The squared portion 5 of the handle received in 'the squared opening 13 of thefsocket member, causes the socket member to revolve with the handle when the handle is operated. When the socket member is to be removed, the application of slight pressure thereto causes it to ride over the inclined portion member. By providing the substantially V-shaped terminals to the retaining member, the socket member is guided on and oli' the handle, compressing -the ends of the retaining member and permitting the socket member to pass over the projecting portions thereof.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be takenl as a preferred examplerof that various changes in' the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention orV the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. A socket wrench comprising a handle having a reduced squared end, a socket member having a reduced squared opening for the reception of the reduced end of the handle, and a resilient member having its intermediate portion arranged on the squared end of the handle, said member being eX- tended laterally from said intermediate portion beyond the sides of the squared portion of the handle, and being then extended outwardly.
2. A socket wrench comprising 'a handle having a squared end, a socket member having a squared opening therein, and a resilient retaining member having a base ar ranged on the squared end of the handle and a pair of end portions projecting beyond the squared end of the handle, each of said end portions consisting of a pair of inclinedv sections formlng a substantially spring.
In testimony whereof, I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN O. GADBERRY.
