BENJAMIN Si BERNHARD, 0F BOSTON, SACHUSETTS.
DOOR CLOSER,- AND CHECK.
Application filed April 12,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN S. BERN- HARD, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Boston, in the county ofSuifolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Door Closer and Check, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for closing and checking doors or the like and one feature. thereof consists in mounting the parts so that they will be entirely invisible when the door or the-like is closed.
Another feature is a flexible connecting element which. is the only movable part of the device visible between the door and, frame when the door is open. I
Another feature is a rotary member to operate the closing and checking mechanism, said rotary member having wound upon it said flexible member.
Other features will be pointed out below.
ln the drawings- Figure l is a plan, partly in section, of :1 device embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the same; Figure}; is an end elevation of the parts mounted in the door and looking from the left;. ,i
l igiire v4' is a section on line 4-4 of ltiigure fZA-and showing certain other parts in I ection? 1 Figure-*5 is a sectional view taken on line 5 5 of'Figure l;
' Figured is an elevation, partly in section, .slio'wingthe-door closed Figure "7 is a" section on line 7-7 of higurefiyand Figure 8 is a sectional detail described elow. 1
ln the drawing; 1 show a right-handed hinged door but my invention is applicable to doors or the like which have left-handed hinged mountings or other mountings than hinged.
The door frame A is recessed to receive :in anchoring member A, the outer portion of which is flush with the frame and is held by screws a and a and has an opening (1:
suitably formed for universal swinging connection with member (1 which has connection with fiexiblemember [k which is preferably a metal strap but might be of any suitable shape or material, the preferred connection being made by passing the end of member A through opening a in member a: and then attaching a vided with rack B. engaging pinion ample, casing B is to 1922. Serial No. 551,902.
holding element such as rivet a seated. in recess w".
Embedded in the door B is a cylindrical casing 13 having a plate portion 6, the outer portion of which is flush with the edge of the door, said plate portion being held in position by screws b, and having a perforation b to permit passage of member A Bushing 12 carries thimble b which furnishes one abutment for spring B and said thimble, and consequently the spring may be adjusted by screw b. The other abutment of the spring is B on shaft B, to which is pinned flanged drum B, around which is wound the end of member A .said end being connected to said. drum at B The piston is provided with a strengthening web and with ball valves of a well-known type and conduit B? leads from one end of the casing nearly to the other end, said conduit being controlled by valve B, the head of which is in threaded engagement with a threaded recess in the ca ing.
The casing B has a boss I) having-a ceni I'Ill opening large enough to permit passage iherethrough of bearing member 6' which may be then threaded into place, after which the shaft B with its pinion is put in place through said opening and then bearing member 12 is put in place, after which the drum is pinned to shaft B".
The casing is preferably completely filled with suitable fluid and as the door is moved from its closed position the member at swings and the flexible member A is unwound, rotating the drum and consequently the pinion and moves the piston to the left as in Figure 4, compressing the spring and permitting most of the fluid to flow past the balls of the ball valves and some through the piston B proconduit B". When the door is released the i nal position and thereupon the fluid passes through conduit 13* but can not return past the balls and the drum actuated by the rack and pinion winds up member A? and thereby closes the door, the checking action being caused by the fluid passing through conduit B and controlled by valve B and when the door is closed as shown in Figure 6 there will be absolutely no portion of the device visible from either side of the door.
In installing my device, in case, for exbe mounted in the out and hold it by against the face of then inserted in the by screws b and the is inserted in the frame and a and a and then the clamp of putting strap A 6 in plate 6 through may be lowered into open- %Vhat I claim is:
