The construction and operation of my invention is as follows;
The operation of nailing a box consists in first nailing the first side onto the end members (see Fig. 4), then the bottom member is nailed on (see Fig. 5),'and finally the second side (see Fig. 6).
In these operations it will be apparent that the height of the work varies during the different operations and since it is essential that the top of the work be supported in proper relation below thechucks 4, some means of taking care of the difference in heights must be provided and it is with a view of accomplishing -this result that I have devised my invention.
Hitherto this has been accomplished in various ways such as by providing for adjustments up and down of the work table 2 or of a supplementary table carried by the main table, but this has been cumbersome and has been accomplished manually when desired by the operator.
In the form of my invention illustrated thefirst operation in constructing a box consists in nailing on the first side (see Fig.
In this operation the adjusting blocks 12 are stationed so that the steps B are below the chucks 4, the height of the step B being. equal to the thickness of one of the side pieces 44.
y The end pieces 43 are slipped into the open grips 27 and 28 and rest upon the steps B. The side 44is then placed above the ends in position under the chucks 4 and the nail driving mechanism is operated in the usual Imanner by releasing a trip (not shown) which causes the reciprocatory head 8 to descend thus operating the nail driver rods 7 vafter the usual manner.
The next operation consists in nailing on the bottom 45 and since the height of the box in this case is less than the width it is necessary to compensate for this difference, and in nailing the bottom vthe adjusting blocks 12 move inwardly so that the steps A are under the chucks and support the ends 43 (see Fig. 5).
This inward movement of the blocks 12 is accomplished as follows.
During the previous descent of the reciprocatory head 8 in nailing the first side 44, as above. described, through the medium of the connecting rod 35, bell crank 34 and connecting rod 38 the pawl 41 was moved anti-clockwise (see Fig. 2) and slipped freely around the ratchet wheel 22 to grip the next tooth 23 thereon.
During the following ascent of the head 8 the pawl 41 rotated the ratchet wheel 22 and with it the shaft 2O through 120 degrees and thus the cam wheels 25 were rotated through `one-thirdl of a revolution. This brought the lowest portion D of the cam surfaces 26 in contact with the rollers 15 so that the blocks 12 were drawn inwardly to their full extent by the springs 17.

Various modiiications may be made in my Y invention without departing from the spirit ot the invention or the scope of the claims `and therefore the exact forms shown are to be taken as illustrative lonly, and not in a limiting sense.

In a nailingmachinethecombination with the main frame of the machine, a plurality of sets of nail holding chucks, rigylow oney of chucks, and means for'simultaneously moving` `the. blocks transversely upon the table whereby corresponding steps thereof may be positioned below the various sets of chucks.

In a nailing machine the combination with the main frame o-f the machine, a plurality of setsof nail'holding chucks, rigidly supported by the main frame,vthe sets spacedy transversely of the machine` a work supporting table rigidly carried by the main Vtraine in 'spaced relation belowl the chucks, nail driving means `associated withv the chucks, and a reciprocatory head mounted upon vertical guides on the main frame and operatively engaging the nail driving means, of aI plurality ofl stepped blocks slidably supported upon the upper` face of the table, each block constitut-inga work support below one set of chucks, means'for simultaneously moving the blocks transversely upon the table whereby corresponding steps thereof may be positioned below the various sets yof chucksand means'operatively connecting said block moving means with the reciprocatory head whereby the latter is actuated by the former. y i

In a nailing machine the combination with the main frame of the machine, two sets of nail holding chucks rigidly supported by lthe main frame, the sets spaced transversely of the machine, a. work supporting table rigidly carrieclby the main frame in spaced relation below the chucks, nail driving means associated withthe chucks, and a reciprocatory head mounted upon Vertical guides on the main frame and operatively engaging `the nail drivingmeans, of two stepped blocks slidably supported 'upon the upper face of the table, each block constitut-ing a work support below one set of lidly supported by the main frame, the sets i chucks, a slide secured to the under face of each bloc-k, said slides freely mounted in aligned transverse slots in the table, a roller carried by the under face of each slide, a shaft rotatably supported at the under face of the table and extending transversely thereof, a pair of outwardly disposed cam wheels rigidly carried by the Shafts, spring means forcing the slides inwardly and maintaining the aforesaid rollers in engagement with the cam surfaces of the cam wheels, and means operatively connecting the transverse shaft and the reciprocatory head whereby the latter is rotated by the reciprocation of the former.
