Application filed Decemher 9, 1922. Serial No. 605,930.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. RU'rrnN; Bane, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the count of Cook and State of Illinois, have invente net. and useful improvements in F inials, of which the following is a specification. *This invention relates to finials or shade clamps, such as used on floor, table, or other pedestal lamps, for holding the shade In place, and an object of the invention is to provide a finial which will not only serve to hold the shade rigidly in place but one which will add to the aesthetic value of the lamp.
Another object of this invention is to pro vide afinial or shade clamp in which a composition of metal is utilized in combination with lass, crystal or analogous material in provi 'ng a practical artistic finial.
Another object of this invention is to provide a finial or shade clamp as specified which embodies a novel manner'of connecting the crystal with the main body.
A feature of my invention is the novel manner in which one end ortion of the crystal is directly embedde in the ornamental body. a
Other objects of the invention will 'ap pear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the improved finial.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the-finial taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the core and or 'stal of the finial.
*ig. 4 is :1 Ion itudinal section taken on the line 4--4 of ig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a. cross section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the improved finial or shade clamp,
' comprises essentially, the body 1 and core 2.
The body 1 is made of any suitable plastic composition and is molded first, in two halves in its artistic desi n, after which the molded halves are placed one on each side of the core 2 and secured to each other b any suitable type of adhesive, or by the a hesive proclivities contained in the composition matter itself.
The core 2 comprises a metal tube or sleeve 3 which has its outer surface corrugated as shown at 4 to increase the surface area, and also to prevent accidental rotary or slipping movement of the'composition body 1 relative to the core after the cornposition body has been properly placed in position. The tube 3 is provided with an inwardly extending annular flange 5 which forms an abutment for limiting the threading of the finial upon the threaded tube (not shown) of the lamp pedestal. The portion of the tube 3 below the flange 5 is internally threaded as shown at 6. The crystal or jewel 7 may be of any desired shape, color or design, and it has a substantially cylindrical stem 8 formed upon its lower portion, which stem is inserted into the tube 3, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawhit ings, and 1s cemented therein by any ap sections of which the body 1' are formed are connected, they form a single unit or homogeneous body or mask permitting the cut or artistic upper edge of the crystal or jewel to be exhibited above the body.
In the foregoing description I set forth one method 0 composition material but I wish it to be understood that the body may be constructed of various materials and. in fact may be formed in a die castin operation which uses composition materia known as white metal. in other words the main portion of the body 1 may be made in one piece with the crystal 7 therein as illustrated.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in other'manners and the parts associated no. different relations and, therefore, I do not desire to bemanner except as set forth limited in an in the claims ereunto appended.
' Having-thus described my invention what I claim is 1. As a new article of manufacture a finial comprising an ornamentalbody, and
an ornamental element having a portion thereof embedded in said body.
2. As a new artlcle of manufacture, a
finial for pedestal lamps comprising a body of composition material, and a crystal having a stem embedded in said body.
constructing the finial fi omthreaded portion.
' said tube 3.1% finial for pedestal lamps, a bodv of composition material, a tube embodied in said body. and a crystal carried by said tube and projectin out of said body.
4. A finial for pedestal famps. comprising a body of composition material, a tube embedded in said body and having a threaded portion at one end, and a crystal carried by and projecting out of said body.
5. A finial for pedestal lamps comprising a body of composition material, a tube embedded in said body portion at one end, and a crystal carried by said tube and projecting out of said body, said tube provided with an annular inwardly extending flange at the inner terminal of its comprising 6. A finial for pedestal lamps, comprising a body of composition material, a tube embedded in said body and having a threaded portion at one'endrantl a crystal carried bv,
said tube and projecting out of said body. the major portion of the outer surfaces of said tube being roughened.
body ha \ing and having a threaded emma 7. In a finial for pedestal lamps, a metal tube. a crystal having a stem formed thereon, said stem extending into and cemented to said body, and a body ofcomposition material mounted about said tube and the stem of said crystal.
8. A finial comprising an ornamental screw threads formed in one end portion, and an ornamental element having a portion embedded in the other end portion of said body.
9. A finial comprisingan ornamental body. attaching means for one end of the body. and a glass ornamental member havinga portion thereof embedded in the other end of said body.
10. A finial comprising an ornamental body having a threaded recess in one end thereof. and a one piece ornamental element directly attached to said body.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature;
EDWARD c. RUTTENBERG.
