CROCHET NEEDLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDNA M. CHRISTEN- SEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winner, in the county of Tripp and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Crochet Needles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to crochet needles and has for its object the provision of an improved needle which has a flat intermediate portion grooved upon opposite sides and designed to prevent slipping within the fingers of an operator and having its end portions rounded and hooked in the usual manner "but of difierent diameters so that in one tool I provide the advantages of two ordinary needles.

An important object is the provision of a needle of this character provided with caps engageable upon the end portions whereby to protect the hooks thereon against injury.

An additional object is the provision of a needle of this character which will be very simple and inexpensive in construction, highly efficient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.

With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my needle,

Figure 2 is an elevation at right angles to Figure 1,

Figure 3 is a central cross sectional view, and

Figure 4 is a side elevation showing the protective caps in position, one cap being in section.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, I have shown my needle as formed from a single piece of suitable material. This needle includes a relatively wide thin intermediate portion 10 of equal width throughout its length and approximately of a length equal to one half of the entire length of the needle. The flattened portion 10 has formed in opposite sides .a centrally arranged and longitudinally extending groove as shown at 11, to further insure its non-sli' ping within the fingers of the operator,- e walls of the grooves 11; are trans versely curved and when the needle is in use a portion of the forefinger between the end of the finger and the first joint is positioned within the groove on one side of the flattened portion, and a portion of the thumb is arranged within the groove on the opposite side of the flattened portion; thereby, enabling the manipulator of the needle to firmly hold the same against longitudinal movement without exerting undue pressure upon the needle and thereby tiring the hand. At its ends the needle is reduced and pointed, as shown at 12 and 13, and it will be observed that one end is relatively fine and the other relatively short so that the devicewill possess all the advantages of two separate needles of different sizes. These ends terminate in the usual hooks 14.

In order to protect the needle ends against injury from any cause I prefer to employ caps 15 and 16 formed of suitable material and disposable about the end portions 12 and 13, respectively, with the open ends of the caps frictionally engaging the inclined junctures of the end portions with the central portion of the body.

In the use of this needle it will be seen that it is operated in identically the same manner as any other needle but it will be noted that it has the great advantage of being capable of being held rigidly without any possibility of slipping.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understoodthat I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:

1. A crochet needle having a flattened portion intermediate its ends approximating in length one half of the length of the needle and a centrally arranged longitudinally extending groove in opposite sides of said flattened portion having the wall thereof curved transversely.

2.
