UNITED STATE$ 1,476,474 PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED C. STAHFEST, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO EBERHARD FABEB PENCIL COMPANY, A CORPORAITION OF. NEW YORK.
SHIPPING CASE AND DISPLAY STAND.
Application filed January 16, 1923. Serial No. 612,905.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED C. STAHFEST, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, borough of Bronx, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shipping Cases and Display Stands, of which the fo lowing is a specification. t The primary object of this invention is to 1 provide a combined shipping case or package and display stand, particularly for pencils or the like, in which thearticles may be enclosed for transportation or other purposes and displayed in an accessible position when desired.
Another object is to provide such a device constructed so as to provide storage space for reserve supplies of the articles being displayed.
Further objects are to provide a device of the character described including a'box having an open top and a bodily removable cover adapted to close said top, said cover being provided with means to support ar 5 ticles and said box and cover being formed with cooperating means to support said cover in a position at an angle to said box to display said articles; to thus provide such a device in which the box is formed in opposite so sides with grooves to receive the edges of said cover to support said cover edgewise in upright position intermediate the length of said sides whereby a reserve supply of said articles may be stored in said box behind said cover which conceals them from view; to form the cover of such a device with pocks ets on its bottom side to support said articles so that said articles may e completely enclosed in the box by placing said cover thereon, and displayed by merely raising the cover and setting it edgewise in the box and to obtain other results and advantages as may be brought out by the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which the same characters of reference designate corresponding and like parts,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a case and display stand constructed in accordance with my invention shown in closed condition;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the device with the cover in position to display the articles;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view,
on a reduced scale, through the case shown in closed condition;
Flgure 4 is a transverse vertical sectional View taken on the line 44 of Fi re 3;
Figure 5 1s aeview similar to Figure 4 50 with the cover arranged to display the artlcles, and l Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmenta sect1ona5l view taken on the line 66 o t Figure In the specific embodiment of the invent1on shown on the drawings, the reference character A designates a box formed of suitable material, such as wood, and compr1s1ng a bottom 1, front side 2, rear side 3, w ends 4 and an open top 5. A cover B is provlded to close said open top 5, said cover be ng shown as substantially flat and overlymg the upper ed es of the sides 2 and 3 and ends 4, as clear y shown in Figures 1, 3 and 4. Opposite sides of the box, in the present instance the ends 4, are formed on their inner sides with rooves 6 to slidably receive the end edges 0 the cover B to su port the cover in a substantially upriglit w positlon within the box, as shown 1n Figures 2, 5 and 6. The grooves'6 are positioned adjacent the front side 2 of the box and are preferably inclined so that the cover is slightly inclined rearwardly when positioned 35 in said grooves.
The bottom side of the cover B is formed with a plurality of pockets 7 to support articles to be displayed, in the present instance pencils. Said pockets are shown as so formed of end pieces 8 which are of a size and so secured edgewise to the cover as to slip within the box when the cover is in closing position, as shown in Figures 3 and 4, a transversely extending piece 9 being secured to the outer edges of said end ieces 8 in spaced relation to the cover B, an partitions 10 similar in size and shape to the end pieces 8 being arranged intermediate said end pieces to provide the plurality of pockets. am The pockets are closed at one end by a stri '11 connecting the end pieces 8 at one on thereof. The piece 9 is of a width less than the length of the endpieces 8 so that the outer ends of the pockets are open and the we articles made readily accessible for removal from the pockets. Each of the pockets may be utilized to support a different kind of article.
' For transportation or storage purposes, tit
' the pockets 7 may be filled with the articles the front side of the box and accessible for.
removal. The space between the cover and the rear side 3. of the box may then. be utilized for storing a reserve suppl of the articles, as indicated by dot and ash lines in Figures 2 and 5. it will be noted that the articles in the pockets 7 are always movable with the cover B so that the articles may be enclosed within the box by merely slipping the cover from the grooves 6 and placing it over the open top 5 of the box, and displayed by merely raising the cover and setting it edgewise in the grooves 6 1n the box. tions, namely, supporting the articles, closing the box, and concealing the reserve supply of articles Within the box, and the box has a plural function in enclosing the articles, serving as a base for the cover when the same is in displaying position, and as a tray to receive the reserve supply of articles.
Obviously, many changes may be made in the detail construction of the box, compartments and cover without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention, and
therefore I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself except as re uired by the following claims when construe in the light of the prior art.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a box having an open top, a bodily removable cover adapted to overlie the upper edges of said box to close said The cover thus has a number of funcemma open top, said box being rovided on the inner sides ofi opposite si e walls thereof with grooves to slidahly receive the edges 01f said cover to support the cover edgewise in upright position, and means on one side of said cover to support an article so that when said cover is in closing position said article is enclosed by said box and when said cover is in upright position said article is displayed.
2., A device of the character described, comprising a box having an open top, a bodily removable cover adapted to overlie .the upper edges of said box to close said open top, said box being provided on the inner sides of opposite side walls thereof with grooves to slidably receive the edges of said cover to support the cover edgewise in upright position, and means on one side of said cover to support an article so that when said cover is in closing position said article is enclosed by said box and when said cover is an upright position said article is displayed, said article holding means engaging the inner sides of the side walls of said box when the cover is in closing position to prevent lateral displacement of the cover from the box.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a box having an open top, a bodily removable cover adapted 'to overlie the upper edges of said box to close said open top, said box being provided on the inner sides of opposite side walls adjacent one end thereof wlth rooves to slidably receive the edges of said cover to support the icover edgewise in upright position, and means on one side of said cover to support an article so that when said cover is in closing position said article is enclosed by said box and when said cover is in upright position said article is displayed, said box forming a tray behind said cover when the same is in displayin osition to receive a reserve supply 0 t e article displayed and said cover concealing said reserve supply from view.
