Description
UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
EDW'ARD BAPTIS, OF I-IOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
PEN AND PENCIL CASE..
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 14,760, dated April 29, 1856.
Taall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD BAPTIS, of Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Pen and Pencil Case; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section of myimprovement, the plane ot' section being through the center. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the spiral grooved or slotted tubes by which the pen and pencil are operated or shoved in and out of the case.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two iigures.
My invention consist-s in the peculiar means employed for operating or shoving the pen and pencil in and out of the case. This is effected by two spiral grooved or slotted tubes,
.each inclosed within a tube and fitted one Within the other, as will be presently shown and described, so that the pen and pencil will be operated or shoved alternately in and out of the case by turning the spiral grooved or slotted tubes.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.v
The case is formed of two parts A B. The part A is rathersmaller in diameter than the part B, so that the part B may slide over it, thereby forming an extension-case. The part A has a tube o. fitted within it, said tube being permanently secured within the part A, and having a band b fitted around it, to which band the pen-holder C is attached, t-he band b being allowed to slide upon the tube a. Within the tube a there is placed a spiral grooved or slotted tube c, and the bandb has a projection d attached to it, which projection passes through a longitudinal slot e in the tube a, and fits in the spiral groove in the tube c. Vithin the spirally-groovedtube c there is fitted a tube f, in which a spirallygrooved tube g is fitted. Within the tube g a pencil-slide K is iitted, said slide having a projection h attached to it, which projection fits in the spiral groove of the tube g. (See Figs. 1 and 2.) The two tubes a. f are permanently secured within the part A of the case; but the spirally-grooved tubes c g are allowed to turn within their respective tubes ct f, the tubes c g being connected at their inner ends to a head h', which is iitted within the partB of the case, said head having pins or projections t' at its edge, one or more, which fit in grooves j in the inner side of the part B of the case. The spiral grooves of the two tubes c g are cut in reverse directions, one being a right and the other a left spiral, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, and the projections d on the band b is at one end of the spirally-grooved tube c when the projection h on the pencilslide K is at the opposite end of the spirallygrooved tube g. (See Fig. l.)
By the above description it will be seen thatI by turning the part B of the case first to the right and then to the left the two spiralgrooved tubes c g Will be turned simultaneously, and the pen-holder C and pencil-slide K will be shoved alternately in and out of the part A of the case, the pen-holder and pencil-slide moving simultaneously in opposite directions.
I am aware that penholders and pencilslides have been operated separately by spirally-grooved tubes, and I'therefore do not claim a single spiral groove tube; but
I claim- The two spirally-grooved tubes c g when ar- EDWARD BAPTIS.
Vit-nesses:
WM. TUscH, JAMES F. BUCKLEY.
