To (1N /w/i om lmuy concern Be it known `.that I, MARY A. OLrvnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Johnson City, in the county of Vashington and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bed Bottoms, of which. the following is a specification.
An object of this invention is to produce a bed bottom in which the spring carrying frame is constructed of pivotally connected sections ,and in which means is provided for holding the sections in vlong g'itudinal alignment as well` as for sustaining one of the sections angularly with respect to the other section as when the device is used by invalids, etc.
To the attainment of the foregoing and other objects which will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood. ref vrence will be had to the drawings which accompany and which form part of thisl application.
In the drawings z- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bed bottom` in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional. view on the line of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4 4 of Figure 1, but showing the pivoted section of the spring frame arranged and sustained at an angle with respect to the iixcd section thereof.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view illustrating a slight modification.
Figure 6 illustrates details.
As disclosed by the drawings, my improved bed bottom comprises a pair of spaced rails 1 which are preferably in the nature of pipe members, and which are designed to rest upon the slats or supporting means provided upon a bedstead. The rails 1 adjacent to one of their ends are connected together and held in spaced relation by strap 2, the said strap having angle ends 3 which are upwardly directed and which are secured, by means 4, to the vertical plates of angle irons which constitute the sides 5 of the .fixed section of the spring supporting frame 6. The outer end of the iixed frame section is also in the nature of an angle iron. Also secured to the under face and spacing the rails 1 is a second metallic strip 7 which iS disposed a slight distance inward from the inner end of the fixed section of the spring supporting frame. rl`he strip .7 has its ends upturned, as at S and is secured by means 9 to the side members 5 of the frame section 6. Connected to the upstanding or angle ends of the strip 7, by the same means that secure the same to the frame section 6, there are the angle ends 10 of a reinforcing strip 11.
Adjacent to the opposite end of the construe ion, the rails 1 are connected and held in spaced relation by a peculiarly shaped member. The member is preferably in the nature of a metal strip, having its ends 12 secured by means 13 to the rails 1, and from its said ends the strip is given a half twist and extended upwardly, as at 14, thence bent angularly, as at 15, and continued downwardly approximately in a line with the inner sides of the rails 1, these last mentioned portions 16 being formed on the ends of the central straight portion 17 of the strip 11. The upturned ends of the strip 11 provide rests which underlie the horizontal portions of the angle flanges 18 that constitute the sides of the swinging spring carrying frame section. The outer end of the swinging frame section 19 is also in the nature of an angle iron, and the horizontal flanges of the side members 18 of the section 19, at their inner or free ends are cut away so that the vertical ianges are projected over the vertical iianges of the fixed section 6 to provide what may be termed ears 2O which are secured by pivots 21 to the said fixed frame section. By such arrangement, it will be noted that the swinging or movable frame section 19 will be effectively sustained in horizontalalignment with the lixed sec-v tion 6.
Pivotally secured to the sides 18 of the movable frame section 19 there are links 22. Pivotally secured to the rails 1 below the links 22 are links 23. The pairs of links 22 and 23 have their ends in lapping engagement, and are provided with aligning openings through which pass the Shanks of threaded elements 24, the said elements being engaged by winged nuts 25. By this arrangement it will be noted that the movable section 19 of the spring carrying frame may be arranged at a desired upward angle with respect to the fixed section 6, and sustained at such angle.
The spring bottom for the frame comprises disk members 30 connected together by the hooked ends of both longitudinally and laterally directed wire members or rods 31, the outer disks 8O being connected to the horizontal flanges of the frame by helical springs .32.
In Figure 5, I have illustrated a slight modification. The spring carrying frame is of a construction similar to that previously described and is supported above the rails also in a manner siin'lar to that described. rIhe swinging or movable section 33, in this instance, has its sides provided with curved centrally slotted arms 34, which are in contacting engagement with the sides of the rails l. The rails l have threaded openings therethrough, aligning with the slots in the arms, and passing through the openings and slots are threaded elements 35 engaged by winged nuts 36.
It is believed that the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings will fully set forth the construction and advantages of the improvements to those skilled in the art to which such inventions relate, so that further detailed description will not be attempted.
Having described the invention, I claim A bed bottom including spaced rails, metal strips secured to and spacing the rails, certain of said strips having upstanding ends and reinforcements for said ends, a spring frame including a ixed section connected to the ends oi' the mentioned strips, a swinging section pivctally secured to the fixed section, each oi said sections comprising angle irons, the strip disposed below the swinging section having its upturned ends arranged at an inward angle and from thence bent downwardly to the connecting portfon 'for said strip to provide rests for the horizontal flange of the swinging frame section to'sustain the same in alignment with the lined section, and means vbetween the sides of the swinging section and the rails for sustaining the swinging section at an angle with respect to the lifted section.
