Be it known that I, PAUL F. Cox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and Stateof Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing Presses; and
I hereby declare that the following is a full, Y
clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fiat-bed web perfecting printing presses in Which the web is printed by means of traveling (oscillating) impression cylinders from flat forms of type or plates, resting upon stationary beds; while the cylinders are moving in one direction; said cylinders returning over the beds out of contact with the printing forms,,to givetime for the intermittent spacing and feeding of the web of paper. In such presses the impression cylinders are preferably raised and held.- olf impression upon one stroke, so as not to contact the printing forms; and are then lowered down to bearers, or printing line, and held firmly on impression during the re turn stroke of such cylinders.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a novel simple mecha nism for operating the Web compensating looping rollers. More specifically the invention consists in providing a cam bar, moved in unison with and by the cylinder crossheads, for operating such looping rollers. By this cam ba the operation of the web looping rollers is controlled in proper time.

In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings the cam bar for operating the looping rollers is attached to one of the reciprocating crossheads by which the cylinders and inking rollers are moved back and forth over the 'beds; th'e cam bar being located in the most convenient and accessible position for inspection and attachment ooacting with an arm connected with the looping roller supports and by which the latter are oscillated to move the rollers in the proper time and manner to cause the desired alternate well and shift of the web overthe beds by the looping rollers during thereclprocations of the cylinders.
While the invention is primarily designed for use in a web perfectingpress, it is appllcable to slngle acting presses; and to other types of machines in which traveling cylinders are employed which are to be:
thrown off impression? on one stroke and thrown on impressionon the return stroke.
I will explain'the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate so much of a web perfecting press as Wlll enable the invention to be clearly understood; and summarize in the claims the p essentials of the invention, and the novel features of construction, and novel combina n1sm for actuating the web looping rollers. 4

The cylinder 2 is shown as journaled in eccentric bearings 5 on the crosshead, and the cylinder 2 in eccentric bearings 5 on the crosshead. Such bearings are well known and are preferably constructed as shown in my application #6603, filed August 27, 1921 Serial #495,872 and needs no further description herein.
The general construction and arrangement ofsuch machine and of the aforesaid parts are well known and need no further detailed explanation herein.

The delivery roll 8 is preferably driven by and from roll 5. The under side of the cam bar 6 is so shape-d that as the crossheads move inwardly the arm 6 is depressed, thereby rocking shaft 6, against the action of the springs 6 and moving the looping roller 6 to the right and roller 6 to the left, as the crossheads move toward the shaft 4.
When the orossheads move away from shaft l the cam bar 6 isjretracted and springs 6 throw the arms 6 upwardly, thereby rocking shaft 6 in the opposite direction and keeping roller 6 in close contactwi-th the underside of the bar 6 and thereby moving the roller 6 to the left and 6 to the right, Fig. 1. The cam 6 is reciprocated by and with the orossheads and moves in a path of travel parallel with the path of travel of the im pression cylinder and causes the looping rollers 6 6 to properly take up and give out the web during the inward stroke of the cylinders and permits them to give out and take up web during outward movement of the cylinder. f V r By properly shaping'the' cam face of (ram bar 6 the operation of the web looping rollers 6*, 6 is effected and controlled in propertime with the printing, feeding, and
delivering mechanism (in the single acting press) without requiring any extra gearing or shafting or bars; the cam being operated in perfect time and unison with other mechanisms from the main crank wheel shaft.
The web tensioning roller 7 is mounted on arms 7 attached to a rock shaft 7 S mounted in the side frames, and to one of these arms is connected a rod 7 which extends through a bracket 7 on the main frame, see Fig. 3, and is provided with an adjusting nut 7 on its outer end. A spring 7 is'interposed between the bracket 7 and the nut 7, whereby the tension of the spring 7 can be regulated. The spring 7 normally tends to draw the rod 7 outward and causes the roller 7 to automatically maintain the desired tension on the web to between the infeed roll 5 and the outfeed roll 8.
Operation: In the press shown; by dis.
engaging the feed roll 5 fro1n the shaft 4 rolls '8 and 5 can be operated manually, as described, and the web can be easily threaded through the press. When the press is properly threaded, as indicated in Fig. 2, and

one giving out web as required by the delivery, and the other taking up the web fed in by the feed roll, as required bythe continu ous infeed and outfeed of the web. After the cylinders have cleared the forms and are off impression, the web is shifted forward by the combined action of the looping rollers, giving out and taking up web, and the continuous action of the outfeed and delivery mechanisms; these operations are well understood in the art and need nodetailed explanation herein. a
