OIL BURNER.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in oil burners, and is particularly adapted tor use in a furnace ot the ordinary coal burning type.
One of the primary objects of my invention is to provide a device ot this character in which the air tlue oi the burner is so constructed and positioned that. the swift inrush of air just as the combustion takes place which :auses a loud roaring sound, which is common to other burners oi similar type now on the market, is eliminated.
A further object oi? my invention is to provide an oil burner comprising a. hollow cylindrical supporting flange torest on the coal burning grate ot the furnace. a burner plate having a slight concaved or shallow il ace adapted to be supported by the flange, an oil supply or teed pipe passing up through the center of the supporting flange and burner plate, and an air flue supported by the supporting hinge and adapted to re ceive the air coming from the cylindrical supporting flange and distributing same centrally over the hurner plate and oil teed discharge.
A still further object of my invention is to provide the surface oi? the burner p ate with a number of projecting points so that the oil as it is being converted by the heat into gas is forced down over the burner plate and as the gas comes in contact with the projecting points it is thrown upward through the air. thereby thoroughly mixing with the air making complete combustion, eliminating smoke and giving off more heatfrom the sameamount of oil used.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device ot this character. which is simple in construction and operation. durable, efficient for the purpose intended and one that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a relatively low cost.
These and like objects of my invention will be better understood as the description proceeds and as is specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
which form a part of this specification, for the purpose of clearly illustrating the construction of my invention,
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved oil burner, with a portion of the air flue broken away to better illustrate the construc tion of the burner plate.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of same, with a portion of the air flue partly broken away.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the supporting flange, with the burner plate and air flue removed.

Figure 5 is a side elevation of the air flue detached, from the supporting flange.
Referring to the drawings in detail, like numerals will be used to designate like parts in the different views.
The numeral 1 indicates a su )port-ingflange, which is approximately cy indrical in shape and provided at the top and bottom of same with flanges 2-2. A burner plate which is designated by the numeral 3, is provided with a shallow or concaved face -l. Formed integral with the surface ot the burner plate 3 and positioned bet-ween the shallow or concaved portion t and the edge of the plate are a. number of projections or projecting points 5, the purpose of which will be better understood as the description follows. The center of the burner plate ll is so shaped as to provide an upwardly curved cylindrical shaped portion (3 in which the end T of the oil teed pipe 8 is positioned.
The supporting flange 1 is provided at one side of same with a circular opening 9 to provide a seat and support for the air flue 10. The air line 10 is bent as at 12 to form approximately a U-shaped member. The downwardly turned end of the U-shaped air flue 10 is provided with a flared end 13. Guides or supports 1 L are termed integral with the burner plate, so that the flared end 13 ot the Ushaped air flue 10 will be positioned directly over the opening 7 of the oil t'eed pipe 8.
In installing my improved oil burner in a coal furnace of the usual type, the supporting flange 1 is placed directly on the coal grate in approximately the center of same. and a covering of asbestos paper is placed over the coal grate between the oil flange 2 ot the supporting flange 1 and the side of the tire box of the furnace. Ordinary com mon sand is then placed over the asbestos paper and built up to a height to that of the By installing my improved burner in this manner, the air coming in through the lower stove door is all compelled to pass up through the supporting flange, then through the air flue 10 and passes out of the flared end of same over the oil which rolls down. on the burner plate from the opening 7 in the feed pipe.
After my improved burner has been installed in a furnace as above described and it is desired to start same, a lighter piece of paper is placed on the furnel' plate 3, the oil is then turned on and allowed to flow out of the opening 7 over the burner plate after which a needle valve, not shown, is closed until the oil which has been ignited by the burning paper is almost consumed. During this operation the door of the furnace is left partly open to check the drafts. By the time the oil which has been allowed to flow out over the plate has been entirely consumed, the burner plate has become heated to a certain extent that when the needle valve is again opened and oil allowed to flow over same, the oil is thrown upwardly in the air by the projecting points, thus causing same to mix with the air which is passing over the oil, thus causing a thorough combustion. The amount of flame desired is regulated by a needle valve placed in the oil'feed.
In View of the foregoing description as.
to the operation and construction. of my invention taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it is thought that further explanation as to the operation and objects of same are unnecessary.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, I realize that various minor changes may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed, therefore, I do not wish to limit myself to the exact details of construction shown, nor to the combination and arrangement of parts.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An oil burner comprising a cylindrical support adapted to be positioned over an open grate, a burner plate supported by a circular base, an oil feed pipe projecting through the supporting base centrally of same and provided with an opening centrally of the burner plate on a plane slightly above same, and an air flue supported by the circular base and connected with the interior of same to provide a downwardly flow of air over the burner plate.
2. An oil'burner comprising a circular base plate adapted to be supported on an open grate, a burner plate supported in said circular base, said burner plate provided with a concaved face, oil obstructing projections formed integral with the face of the burner plate and positioned between the concaved portion of same and the outer edge, an oil feed pipe extending upwardly central of the supporting base and through the burner plate and an air flue supported by the circular base plate and formed to have the discharge end of same directly over the center of the burner plate and the oil feed pipe discharge.
3. An oil burner comprising a circular supporting base adapted to be positioned over an open grate, a burner plate supported by the circular base plate, a cylindrical shoulder formed centrally of the burner plate and adapted to support an oil feed pipe, said oil feed pipe having a discharge opening on a plane slightly above the cylindrical supporting shoulder, projecting points formed on the surface of the burner plate, an air flue supported by the circular base plate and adapted to be positioned directly over the circular supporting shoulder of the burner plate and the oil feed pipe discharge.
4. An. oil burner comprising a hollow cylindrical supporting base adapted to be positioned on an open grate, a burner plate supported by said cylindrical base member, an oil feed pipe extending upwardly centrally of the circular base member and burner plate and provided with an opening on a plane above the burner plate, a U-shaped air fiue supported by the circular base plate and having the open end of the air flue flared and positioned directly over the center. of the burner plate and oil feed pipe dis charge.
