OPERATING TABLE.
Application filed March 18,1922. Serial No. 544,871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, OsoAn BOTO SOHELL- BERG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Operating Table, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description).
The present invention relates to new and useful-improvements in operating tables, and it pertains more particularly to a table especially adapted for use in connection with the apparatus shown in my coending application filed April 22, 1921, earing Serial No. 463,702.
It is one of the primary objects of the present invention to provide a new and improved form of Operating table especially adapted for use in operations for treating the alimentary canal.
Itis a further object of the invention to construct the operating table so that the patient may occupy a horizontal position, aj sitting position, or a position ',between the two. l 1
It is a further object of the invention to provide means in connection with the table for supporting a three-way valve, the construction of which forms a portion of the subject-matter of the above-mentioned application.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a table in which the adjustable foot rest is employed.
It is a further object of the invention to construct the table so that it may be connected with a suitable sewer system.

Referring more particularly t0 the drawings, the reference character 10 designates a base and rigidly carried thereby'and projecting/vertically therefrom is a hollow standard 11. The upper end of the hollow standard 11 is provided with an enlarged flange 12, and rigidly carried by said enlarged flange 12 is a rigid seat portion 13. This tubular standard 11 is provided with a sight opening 14, and mounted within the hollow standard in a position behind the sight opening 14 is a transparent hopper 15. This hopper 15 has a contracted lower end 16, which is received within a fitting 17, said fitting 17 being supported within the hollow standard 11 `by means of a spider or the like 18. Having screw-threaded engagement with the fitting 17, as at 19, is a length of pipe 20, and connected to said pipe 20 is an elbow 21, to which is connected a length 0f pipe 22, this last-mentioned length of pipe 22 Vextending through an Opening 23 in the hollow standard 11. This length of pipe 22 is connected as at 25 to an elbow 24, which forms the means by which it is connected to asuitable sewer line 26, more clearly shown in Fig. 1. The hopper 15 is graduated as at 15', the purpose of which will be hereinafter more specifically described.
lnterposed between the upper end of the hopper 15 and the seat section 13, is a rubber gasket 27 by means of which a tight joint between the upper edge of the hopper 15 and the side sections 13 is maintained.
Located within the hollow standard 11, at a point diametrically opposite the sight opening 14, is an electric element 30, said electric element 30 receiving its power from the line 31 and serving to illuminate the hopper 15 inl order that the contents thereot` mayn be examined through the sight Opening 14. Mounted in the fitting 17 heretofore mentioned is a valve 33, and said valve 33 is controlled by means of a lever 34 operating in an opening 35 formed in the hollow standard 11. B this means the valve may be opened at will to discharge the contents of the hopper into the length of p ipe 20.
Leading into the hopper is a pipe 36 connected to a supply line 37, andl said pipe 36 has its inner end positioned within the hopper and curved as indicated by the reference character 38. By this means the hopper is flushed and cleaned at will by operation of the valves 40 shown in Fig. 1, said valves controlling the How of fluid from the main line 41 to the line 37 and hence to the hopper 15.
Pivotally secured as at 50 to the rigid seat section 13 is a. foot section 51 and said foot section 51 comprises side rails 52, the ltop of the table being formed from lglass or other suitable transparent material The reference character 54 designates a vertically standing foot rest and said foot restcarries a rearwardly projecting rack member 55 which is secured to the foot rest at a point substantially centrally ot' the ends thereof.
Extending transversely of the Jf'oot section 51 and mounted in the side rails 52 is a shaft 56, andl secured to said shat't in a position where it will engage the rack 55 is a pinion 57. This shaft 56 is provided with a hand wheel 58 by means of which it is rotated to move the foot rest 54 towards or away from the foot section 51 at the will of the operator.
Extending vertically from the rigid seat section 13 is a bracket 60, and pivotally mounted on the upper end of said bracket is an arm 61. Pivotally secured as at 62 to Said arm 61, is an arm 63, and pivotally se-v curved to the arm 63 as at 64, is an arm 65. As more clearly shown in Fig. 1, the arm 66 is pivotally secured as at 67 to the arm 65, and rigidly secured to the outer free end of the arm 66 are two curved arms 68. These curved arms are each provided with a grooved lug 69, and said grooved lug and curved arm 68 are so shaped as to receive and provide a support for a three-way valve 70. Connected to one outlet ot the threeway valve 7 0. is a tube 71, by means of which the treatments are carried out'. and leading from another of the outlets ot the threeway valve 70 is a tube 72 leadin` y to a jar or other suitable receptacle 73. leading to the three-way valve 70 is a tube 74, and said tube 74 is connected to a vY-titting 75, the branches of which lead to receptacles 76 and 77 carried by a suitable bracket 78. This last-mentioned structure forms the subjectmatter of my copending application above mentioned and is merely mentioned here for the purpose of describing its relation to the apparatus disclosed herein.
Pivotally secured as at 80 to the rigid seat section 13, is a back section 81, and as more clearly shown in Fig. 5, this back section comprises angular side rails 82 in which a cushion 83 is removably secured by a plurality of spring clips or the like 84. Each of these angular side rails is provided with a curved slotted member 85, and operating in said curved slotted members 85 is a bolt 86 enclosedin a suitable sleeve 87. One end of this bolt 86 is threaded as at 88, and engaged therewith is an operating handle 89 by means of which suit-able friction may be had to cause a binding or gripping of the curved members 85 between the flanged ends 90 of the sleeve 87 and nuts 91 carried by the rod 82 to secure the table in adjusted position.
Projecting from the foot section 51 on opposite sides thereof are, brackets 100, and pivotally connected as at. 101 to each of said brackets is an outwardly extending lever 102, the rear end of which is pivotally connected as at 103 to an angular lever 10ft` which in turn is pivotallyn mounted on the rod 86 as more clearly shown in Fig. 5. Each of these levers 102 is provided with an arm rest 107 and said levers 102 are adapted to form the arm of the table when the same is adjusted to retain the patient in a sitting posit-ion, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
By this construction it is apparent that the connecting levers 102 in addition to forming the arms of the table serve to cause an operation in unison of the foot section and the back section of thev table. Furthermore, it will be noted that when the table is adjusted with the foot section and the back Section in the same horizontal plane as the seat section, the levers 102 forming the arms of the rtable will fold down into parallelism with the sides of the rigid seat section 13 and will thus be out of the way when the table is in its adjusted position.
-The device functions in the following manner:
The first part of the operation for which the table is adapted for use is carried out with the patient in a horizontal or lying position. lVith the table adjusted as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the patient will occupy a horizontal position, and owing to the relative position of the brackets which support the three-way valve 70, the threeway valve is capable of movement toward the patient in order that the tube 71 may be properly manipulated.' After the first part of the operation is carried out, the table is moved to the-dotted-line position Ashown'in Fig. 1, t us bringing the patient to a sitting position forv the remainder of the operation. Thek result of the operation is collected in the hopper 15, the graduations 15- thereon serving to measure the volume oi' material and liquid discharged. This discharge may be disposed of through the sewer system 22 or the same may be retained within the hopper 15 for analysis or other purpose.
From the foregoing it is apparent that the present invention provides a new and improved form of operating table especially adapted for carrying out operations upon the alimcntary tract, and, at the same time, provides means for collecting and retaining the result of the operation for inspection and analysis. Furthermore, the invention provides an operating table in which the entire operation may be` carried out without necessitating the removall of the patient, and, at `the same time, with the maximum amount of comfort on the part of the patient, as well as an easy manipulation of the apparatus employed.

An operatin table comprising a hollow pedestal provided with a sight opening and a slot therebeneath, a drain extending partially through said pedestal, said drain having its upper end terminating at a point substantially opposite the bottomI of said sight opening, means in said pedestal for supporting sald drain, a valve for controlling said drain, said valve having an operatin handle projecting through the slot beneati the sight opening, and a receptacle supported on the open upper end of said drain, said receptacle having graduations positioned opposite the sight opening in the pedestal. n
