PATENT OFFICE.
NIELS WALTERSEN AASEN, or onarsrmivm, NORWAY.
BREATH nErLEc'ron.
Application filed May 25, 1923. Serial No. 641,467.
To all whom it may concaww.
Be it known that I NIELs WALTERSEN AAsEN, Storgaten 26, (jhristiania, Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breath Deflectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the mvention, such as will enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the Q accompanying drawings .and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is an apparatus conducting the warm respiration air to parts of the head where these warm currents of air have roved to have a somniferous effect probably from their action on certain nerve centers.
The invention shall in the following be specified with'reference to the accompanydrawings, in which Fig. 1 is a vertical section throu h an executionalform of the apparatus, ig. 2 a front view of the same and Fig. 3 a top view of the same.
,The apparatus may suitably have the form ofi a masklike device 1 made of paper, cardboard, celluloid or an other suitable material. The edge of this device is provided with a rim 2 of felt, cotton or any other soft material, said rim serving to tighten the mask against the cheek and chin in order that the respiration air shall not pass away along the sides of the mask.
In its top art the apparatus is suitably provided wit a narrow inturned part 3 adapted to be supported by the part of the forehead lying direct above the root of the nose.
The mask has at its upper portion a bridge form, divided by the inturned .por-
'tion 3 providing an open vaulted passage 4 passing past each eye through which passages the respiration air is conducted past the eyes, temples.
The mask may the eyebrows and the forehead and referably be provided with an automatica ly actin valve or flap- 5 of any suitable construction, said valve or flap opening for inhalation but closing for exhalation. Such valve or flap ma for instance be made from apiece of si or other fabric covering an aperture in the mask but opening more or less for inhalations.
It will be understood that the apparatus acts in such away, that fresh air is inhaled through the valve or flap 5 and the warm exhalation air will be conducted through the passages 4 past the eyes and the adjoining parts of the forehead and temples. The lntermitting warmcurrents of air brushing in this way past the eyes and forehead has, as before mentioned, proved to have a somniferous eflect.
The keeping on of this apparatus during the sleep is not inconvenient. According to experiments made by the applicant, the apparatus will also be efficient for the said purpose, when the valve or flap 5 is dispensed with, both inhalation and exhalation passing then through the passages 4. It is, however, preferable to use an inhalation valve in order to avoid the deposition of moisture within the mask.
The invention is not limited to the specific form of the apparatus illustrated in the drawings. It may for instance only cover nose and'mouth and the warm exhalation air may be carried up tothe forehead, temples or other parts of the head, where warm currents of air have a somniferous effect, by aid of pliable tubes or the like.
Claims:
1. A somniferous device, comprising a mask adapted tobe secured to the face and extending substantially from the chin to "the forehead, and having means for'providing a substantially air-tight fit'against the cheeks and chin, and an arched portion for spacing the upper portion of the mask from the forehead, whereby when said mask is adjusted the relatively warm exfor providing an air-tight fit against the cheeks and chin, a bridge at the upper portion of the mask for spacin said upper portion from the forehead an an inturned portion dividing the" same into two passages,
whereby when said mask is so adjusted the relatively warm exhaled air will be confined and directed upwardly past each eye and the adjoining parts of the forehead.
3. A somniferous device, comprising a mask adapted to be secured to the face and extending substantially from the chin to the forehead, a rim of resilient material formed around the sides and bottom of said mask for providing an air-tight fit against the cheeks and chin, a bridge at the upper portion of the mask for spacing said upper portion from the forehead and an inturned portion dividing the same into two passages, and a valve in the lower portion of the mask adapted to open upon inhalation and close against exhalation whereby when said mask is adjusted the relatively warm ex- N IELS WALTERS EN AASEN.
